Worried after dropping 5 week old baby

I feel terrible today as this morning was carrying our 5 week old back upstairs to mum for a feed in her moses basket when one of the handles slipped and Sophie slipped out and ended up on the wooden floor face down. I don't really know how it happened as all seemed to be in slow motion but suddenly she was on the floor. I don't think she fell very far but I just feel so bad about it. She seemed ok after going to mum for a feed but I'm worried that I've hurt her and it just makes me feel sick thinking of her on the floor. Should we get her checked out? She seems to be ok and is feeding, acting normally. I just feel like I've let her down as a dad.

I did almost EXACTLY the same thing when DS was 6 months old. I was sufficiently paranoid to take him both to the GP and A & E . Everyone was perfectly nice and understandign about it. I would get her checked to put you midn at rest.

get her checked out if it will ease your mind - best thing to do.

ds at 8 weeks (and was 8 weeks prem so effectively com pletely new born) slid out of dh's arms when he was sitting on a chair with him. he's absolutey fine and has never shown any effects of bouncing on the floor. that said dh did beat himself up over it enormously!

There was an article in the BMJ a few years ago by someone who delivered his first baby as a junior doctor and promptly dropped it head first into the bucket at the end of the bed. He was recalling the story b/c the "baby" was just about to graduate from Cambridge medical school.

A taxi driver spilled a friend's 2 month old baby face first onto the pavement when lifting her car seat/ carry cot out of the back of his taxi.

Baby was fine, although with a few scratches to her face.

Taxi driver was also fine, although with a big bruise on his face where she punched him when she saw what had happened.

She says she acted involuntarily/ out of shock at seeing what had happened and taxi driver was very apologetic despite being punched and drove them to nearest A&E - babies bounce and don't cross my friend would be the morals of this story!

Sorry this is a bit late but baby has since had her 8 week check and is fine in every way.

Personally I'm just so relieved! She's smiling lots now and grabbing at her toys so all is well.

Thanks for all your comments. I'll obviously be trying my hardest not to repeat the incident but we're all human so guess this happens to the best of us.
