Worried about 5 month old DD !!

First time mum and my DD just turned 5 month old and showing no signs of rolling. She sometimes turns to her side while playing with toys but nothing more. She has a reflux so I can not lay her flat after a feed and hates tummy time but i still manage to get 3-4 mins everyday. We have started to make her sit with support and she lasts few second without support and has a good balance.

My worry is , is it normal for a baby for not rolling over at 5 months ?

Yep, normal. Dd1 was a reluctant roller, she finally managed to roll reliably in both directions at around 8 months, about a week before she started crawling.

NEbotherpet · 30/11/2021 12:07

She really will do it in her own time, don't worry Smile

Starcaller · 30/11/2021 12:14

DD had zero interest In rolling. She was an early sitter but didn't bother to roll until like seven months or something!

My eldest had no interest in rolling at that age really. I remember when she was about 5.5m old we had a little party with with our NCT lot and even though she was one of the eldest, she was the only one not rolling. She would also turn on her side to play with things. Anyway, she eventually did it at 7m, crawled about a fortnight later. She stood and walked quite late by standards of other babies same age too (10m and 12m) but is now 7yrs old and completely at the same level as her peers physically.

Tomatobear · 30/11/2021 12:18

Don't worry at all. Pretty sure my son didn't roll until 6-7 months. He then crawled at 7.5 months and walked independently at 8.5 months. It all happened at once! They all do it in their own time.

Smurf123 · 30/11/2021 12:21

My dd is almost 5 months and also shows no interest what do ever in rolling.. She can manage to get herself in a complete circle on her playmat while staying on her back the whole time though

RedwineforSantaplease · 30/11/2021 12:37

DS didn't roll till 7mo. He just lay there like a massive potato. Grin

RavenclawsRoar · 30/11/2021 12:45

My now 4yo pretty much never rolled. Wasn't interested. Crawled at 11mo, walked at 13mo and is totally fine. Rolling just wasn't his thing!

Heepers · 30/11/2021 13:54

My daughter basically never rolled. She just wasn't interested at all. She didn't crawl or anything then at 12 months she just stood up and walked across the room. She is developmentally 100% normal.

I really wouldn't worry about it at all - enjoy having a stationary baby!

Timeturnerplease · 30/11/2021 15:06

DD1 didn’t roll or crawl until well after she could walk, couldn’t even attempt it without severe vomiting until the reflux went away at 15 months ish.

She sat at 5 months, was angrily immobile until around 9 months when she started cruising and then walked at 11 months. At just turned 3 I no longer worry about her early inability to roll!

Grasshopper90 · 30/11/2021 15:37

DD didn’t roll until 6 months, around about the same time she started sitting. It was actually really convenient because we wanted to keep her in the crib in our room until 6 months, and we had to move her out of it once she started rolling.

Don’t worry at all, there is loads of time. My advice would be to not read too much into milestone averages, babies do things when they’re ready and it’s usually within the range of normal 🙂

WasteTheDifference · 30/11/2021 18:30

My daughter didn't actually roll over until she could crawl! She just wasn't interested. She crawled at 9 months and walked just before her first birthday

nocoolnamesleft · 30/11/2021 18:32

Refluxy babies who hate tummy time are usually late to roll.

abbs1 · 30/11/2021 18:44

Honestly, I wouldn't worry. My little boy had awful reflux due to CMPA, he hated tummy time and never really rolled over.
Then at 6 months he decided to sit up, was standing and cruising round furniture at 7-8 months did about 4 weeks of crawling and was walking at 9 months.
Every baby is so different. Its so hard not to compare but try not to worry.

OP, welcome to parenthood - where you'll spend the next [rest of your life, realistically] comparing your kids to others and wondering what could be wrong with them/you! :)

Honestly the baby milestones are really individual. My DS1 was a massive potato-type - smiley, chill, inert. I remember crying myself convinced he must have been injured during birth and was now a lifelong "grinning idiot" (of course appalling of me but I had mild PND and those hormones are no joke!)

He was over 11 months old before he crawled and 15 months til he was walking. He's still huge and happy but very physically adept and zero issues.

Try to relax and enjoy your baby! She's perfect as she is

8.5 months walking? Oh my, that must be a world record?

@Theeasypeasywoman the weird thing is every baby is different, some roll early, some don't but then do something else like crawling without rolling. My oldest rolled back to front very early, I have it on video and he kept doing it over and over for a few days then never again. He never rolled front to back as a baby.

My youngest rolled front to back quite late and as other posters have said she then pretty much crawled straight after.

Both my DC have been on different timelines, some things early and some quite late. It's hard not to worry, but give it some time.

SMBC2020 · 01/12/2021 21:08

I literally worried myself sick about my baby not rolling and would cry for hours every night. I spoke to my HV who agreed she was behind with her gross motor skills and we got physio support, which was useless and didn't help at all. She rolled front to back at 8 months, crawled just before she was 10 months and then started rolling back to front. She took her first steps at 12 months and was walking well by 14 months. She still hates rolling!

Mrsmch123 · 01/12/2021 22:25

I have a 5 month old boy who hates tummy time and side play. He refuses to engage when I put him on his side. He's quite happy on his back and is showing zero signs of being able to roll...he will get there eventually I'm sure.

Tomatobear · 02/12/2021 19:03

Apparantly the world record is 6.5 months! Shock

Tomatobear · 02/12/2021 19:04

Meant for @imnotareindeer sorry

DappledThings · 02/12/2021 21:29

DC2 rolled for the first time on her first birthday. Bum shuffled from 16 months, surprised us by crawling at 19 months and finally walked at 21 months. She just wasn't bothered about moving but once she was up she was off. Went from walking to running in a month.

Now nearly 4 and no concerns whatsoever.
