Hello, first time posting. I'm after some input from teachers and / or parents. My son is 6 and is in Yr 2. In Reception and Yr 1 we were always told that he was very bright and capable of working at greater depth. Since he's gone into Yr 2 he doesn't seem to be making much progress, especially in maths which has always been his weaker subject (but we were still told by Yr 1 teacher he was in top 3-4 in class). When I asked him if the teacher helps him in class, he replied 'no, because she has to help child A & B because they have harder work.. Because they're cleverer' He's also said that these same 2 children get given 'longer reading books' despite the fact that my son is happily reading Roald Dahl etc books independently at home (and teacher is aware of this from reading log). I completely understand that the more capable children need to be challenged, and decided to keep quiet and keep an eye on the situation, until my son brought home the script for the Christmas play. The same 2 'cleverest' children have been given starring roles, with many lines. My son, & most of the rest of the class, have a few words each. It just seems to me that, at the tender age of 6, the children's ranking in the class has already been decided, and the attention and time given to those seen as more able is only going to widen the gap. I have a meeting with his teacher next week. I don't want to come across as a parent who thinks their child is gifted when they're not, but I feel he's being left to languish. I would really appreciate objective opinions. Is this consistent with how things should be done in Yr 2? Is the teacher displaying favouritism? Thank you!
