Hey everyone , just a quick one. My 3 year old has been ill since Friday now I've been to hospital twice due to temps that just won't go away! 40.7 was the highest he had got. We are up again with the next episode of temps , 38.8 atm, he's had some calpol and a massive bottle of water that he has demolished I'm happy about that. He hadn't ate a thing since Friday and lost abit of weight. He says he's hungry I make him whatever and he doesn't eat it. My point is it's now Tuesday and he's still got a temp, snotty nose, gunky eyes, sore throat. We have taken covid test still awaiting the results. I'm just fed up now I feel so scared everytime he gets a temp as he had sepsis when he was 3 month old and they kept telling me for weeks it was just a viral infection that turned out it was sepsis. I'm petrified there wrong again , my kids haven't ever lasted this long with a temp when its viral? I also woke up the Saturday and had serious swollen glands (still have) a sharp flemmy cough, head ache , really stiff neck and pain down back too I've still got this headache too. Anyone else experiencing this???

Just a quick handholds from me Flowers.

DD always gets a high temperature, it is just how her body reacts. She scared the life out of me when she had fever convulsions slightly younger than you DS. We have been with her in the A&E /out of hours GP a few times.

I take her when

a) temperature is above 40 and it doesn’t respond to Calpol.

b) she has a temperature which is above 40 without Calpol for more than 5 days

c) She “seems” very poorly.

She never eats when she is poorly and I just try to get anything into her. I make her drink water/cordial/fluid and just generally try to have ice cream, soup, fresh buns, yoghurt, anything really available. Ice lollies often go down.

I don’t recognise the symptoms you have.

If your DS has had over 40 C for more than 5 days, call your GP and ask for him to be seen. They will want to see him. Mine told me to go to A&E when they couldn’t fit DD in.

I really hope it gets better for you Flowers. It is scary when children are younger and very poorly.

Yes! My boy is generally unwell he can barely open his swollen eyes that are filled with gunk. He's always been very close to me and had a Clingy bond, but I've had to come to bed at 7pm with him as he's cried and I've been petrified of his temp spikes. I can hear now he has a really snotty/blocked nose. I'm going to ring the gp ASAP in the morning he looks and feels dreadful. Tommorow will be the 5th day.

It's not clear, when you said he's been to hospital twice is that since Friday or just more generally.

DD15 had also always spiked high temps, and often for her if we can get the temp down she seems much more well and with if. So it's the Temp itself that makes her lethargic etc.

I think wait for the Covid test result, whilst he doesn't sound well he also sounds ok, he's drinking and not floppy etc. If that changes seek help, but suspect the GP will want to wait for the result first.

How does his throat look? Smelly breath?

Have you given him Ibuprofen too ?

GoodnightGrandma · 30/11/2021 06:21

Cooled boiled salt water to clean the eyes, and maybe get some eye drops from the chemist.
A similar thread yesterday had people saying you could buy them over the counter for 2+ years.

GoodnightGrandma · 30/11/2021 06:24

Lolly ices for the throat. Mine always liked black currant ones.
And try giving him really small things to eat. I remember giving mine a quarter of a slice of toast with the crusts cut off. It was small but he kept it down, and then he started eating more.

Yes, tiny toast. DS16 requested it with hot blackcurrant with honey and lemon the other day.

Slice of toast, crusts cut off and cut into postage stamp sized pieces. It's amazing how much they'll eat like this when they wouldn't touch a whole piece.

With Bovril on if stomach bug.

And yes agree about ibuprofen too, you really need to see how he is once the temp is controlled, so you may need to give paracetamol and ibuprofen too do that

MothExterminator · 30/11/2021 06:30

I am so sorry that he is so unwell, poor little boy. Do tell that that he has had > 40 C for 5 days, I think the guidelines says he has to be seen.

Just to put your mind slightly at rest, DD has never been in any danger. Her body just reacts violently to some viruses. Two years ago, she had a cold on the day of the flu vaccine. She got the flu and was so sick. It also gave her a low platelet count (don’t ask me why) and I remember her coughing so she got a nose bleed and not being able to make the nose bleed stop. I was sitting with her and a bunch to tissues at about 3am and thinking “if it doesn’t stop bleeding in 30min, I need to wake up all the other two DC and take us all to the A&E” (DH was travelling). It stopped after 26 min.

All times DD was I’ll, my other two DCs had something similar but quite mild. For some reasons DDs body just reacts this way. “Normal” virus, massive reaction.

I am more relaxed about high temperatures now, but religious about the flu vaccine. It took me a few years to get to this point. I just try to get as much fluid as possible into her when she gets a fever illness and follow my rules (first post) which I got from the NHS webpage somewhere. Just because it is how she usually reacts, doesn’t mean that it isn’t a risk it is serious this time.

I was always terrified when DD was the same age as your son Flowers.

MothExterminator · 30/11/2021 06:35

Yes to both Ibuprofen and Calpol from me as well.

I use to write down time and dose of each medicine on a sheet of paper together with the temperature and time. I worry about going over the 24 hours dose if I don’t (4x paracetamol dose and 3x Nurofen dose if I remember correctly). When DD has her fever spikes we alternate max dose Calpol and Nurofen just to get below 39….

Mini toasts sounds good. I will do those next time.

LefttoherownDevizes · 30/11/2021 06:41

OP are his eyes red or just gunky?. When they're little there's not much room in their sinuses and so it can come out of their eyes.

If the eyes aren't red it's likey to be overflow snot, if they are red likely infection.

GoodnightGrandma · 30/11/2021 06:58

Think about giving him something to eat about 20 minutes after he’s had painkillers, while he’s feeling at his best.
And I always wrote down the times I give it as you can easily forget when sleep deprived and worried.
I used to do Brufen first thing so they ate something, and last thing to help them sleep, with another in the middle and paracetamol in between.
I know it’s horrible but just keep going, we’ve all been there 💐

shabbadababa · 30/11/2021 09:44

Hi everyone, most of you have said the Same thing so I'll answer in one message, yes he's been in hospital twice since this Friday just gone , due to his pulse been high and temp. He is on ibro&paracetamol since Friday too. I have the doctor ringing me back for an appointment as the paramedic has said if there is a temp for 5 days it needs to be controlled with antibiotics.

His eyes are red gunky and swollen. Second day now I have woke up with a very sore neck/back that's causing horrible headaches and seriously swollen glands/tonsils not sure which.

OP posts:
beebeebe · 30/11/2021 09:47

I am not sure if that helps. My DD was dismissed multiple times by GP (they stated viral) and I took her privately to Paediatrician that prescribed antibiotics.

MothExterminator · 30/11/2021 09:49

5 days… yes, that is my experience too. We only got antibiotics once, but they always wanted to see DD and do some tests.

Please try to get some rest and also something to eat yourself as well, even if it only is sweet tea and toast. You need to look after yourself to be able to look after your little boy.

shabbadababa · 30/11/2021 10:53

I'm trying to look after myself too but I'm petrified after my son having sepsis I cant rest thinking they have got it wrong again. I have serious anxiety I am on medication for so this situation isn't helping. I am keeping calm for him but crippling anxiety inside. I'm running off no energy or sleep. My house I'm doing bit by bit to keep clean , I've just out a wash on but I feel miles worse today so I haven't put it on the airer yet.

How is your DS? What did the doctor say?

shabbadababa · 30/11/2021 20:54

Hi everyone. The doctors have said severe ear infection very swollen ears. They have gave him anti biotics and there pretty pissed he wasn't given them the first time with a temp that high. Hopefully he will see an affect tommorow. Still got a temp right now , he wants to sleep in his own bed but I am petrified through the night if he spikes again and I'm not there:'(

OP posts:
MothExterminator · 30/11/2021 22:41

So happy they have found the problem. Fingers crossed the antibiotics will kick in soon.

I would sleep next to him if I were you (I like to sleep next to my DCs if they are I’ll) but you know best what your child needs. Hopefully you had a celebratory cup of tea!!

Hey, he's woke up again snot all down his face like big clumps, eyes glued shut with gunk and a high temp again. This time he's also woke up with hives! Which means a allergic reaction.. the only new thing he's had is the anti biotics I'm hoping he's not allergic to that would be just our luck!

shabbadababa · 01/12/2021 02:18

Also. I have slept with him since Friday, he actually won't go to bed without me now lol partner slept in his bed

whatisheupto · 01/12/2021 02:23

Hand hold for you OP. Maybe ring 111 about the hives?

whatisheupto · 01/12/2021 02:24

But it sounds like you're doing all the right things, well done! Sending strength through the night!

shabbadababa · 01/12/2021 02:28

Oh I'm exhausted ! Temp has flown down due to calpol, happy with that, face and eyes all cleaned up now he feels fresher on his face, couldn't imagine how crappy he feels after 5 days if I feelb this bad with tonsillitis too bless him!:(

Sometimes when they're sick they have difficulty swallowing. There is a spray that can help. Like a pp says, yoghurt, sweet foods, soft buns. Sorry I have nothing else to add. Hope he recovers soon!
