5 month old wee smell

Hi, I'm going to ring the GP first thing tomorrow to get them to test for a UTI but I thought I'd just check on here to see if it could be anything else...

My 5 month old DD's urine absolutely reeks. Its been a couple of days, initially i thought maybe I've not been changing nappy frequently enough or maybe it's the nappy itself. But when I changed her today she peed and I could smell it directly from the urine. It's like that horrible chemically smell of wet nappy but worse and way more pungent, mixed with a bitter kind of smell I guess?

  • we haven't changed nappy brand and in fact I tried two different brands today to check, same smell
  • she's got no temp and is well in herself although today she has started developing a cold and yesterday I guess she brought up more milk than usual (but still not a huge amount, just a bit more than usual for her as she isn't a very sicky baby at all)
  • she's ebf and feeding well
  • very possibly teething, well she's dribbling a lot anyway

Like I said I will get her seen/tested tomorrow for UTI but if it isnt, could it also be a result of teething/a cold coming on?

You've not eaten asparagus by any chance?

Luckyelephant1 · 29/11/2021 20:46

Lol no, not since a couple of weeks ago anyway. That was my first thought!

Coming back to this- I managed to get a urine sample tested and there was no infection. But her pee still really smells. Anyone had anything similar? I'm stumped as to why this is happening.

So you haven't started weening yet? Does she react when you change her nappy, like it's sore?

Luckyelephant1 · 08/12/2021 22:09

Nope, will start to wean at 6 months so just after Christmas. Currently EBF. No soreness when changing nappy at all. Although recently she's been struggling a lot with trapped wind which I guess started around the same time as the pee smell iirc. I haven't changed my diet. The only thing I can think of is that maybe I'm a bit dehydrated so everything is more concentrated (I'm so bad with remembering to drink water in the winter). But she wees loads with lots of heavy nappies so that doesn't seem to fit either.

I know the exact smell. My DS wee absolutely stinks when he's teething, it's something to do with the acidity of their saliva which comes out in their pee. Horrid pungent smell. Could she be teething?

Luckyelephant1 · 08/12/2021 22:25

@Scotabroad24 yes definitely, she's dribbling lots and sometimes very flushed. Didn't realise smelly pee could also be a symptom! Hopefully that's it and there's not something more untoward going on.

Teething? They piss fire.

PunchyAnts · 08/12/2021 22:29

Another vote for teething if the UTI test was negative.

Luckyelephant1 · 08/12/2021 22:42

Ok I feel better now. Don't know why I didn't put two and two together with the pee. Her poos and farts are something else as well!

That'll be it then! I rushed DS to the doctor to check for a UTI the first time it happened too. He said its definitely a symptom of teething.
Usually it's a few days of stinky wee for us before the nappy rash starts, he gets blistered where the urine burns Blush hopefully your dd won't get that but I've found lashings of sudocrem and talc is the only thing that helps.
