Baby drinking less

Has anyone else’s little ones just started drinking less at 2 months old? My little one is 11 weeks today and for the past couple of days she’s just been drinking a lot less, she’s gone from 4-5oz to now just about doing 3? She was 8lbs 5oz born and she weighed 10lbs last time she was weighed so about 3 weeks ago, she dropped a percentile and now she’s just not drinking like she was, she’s having 3oz every 3 hours or so and she’s sleeping from 11pm to 7pm straight through so not even waking for a feed, I’ve spoken to the health visitor and shes clearly not bothered just keeps telling me to not worry but I am, to go from 5oz to 3 is a bit of a jump, has anyone had this problem with their little one?

My baby is around the same age and I’ve had this too, if you look at the side of the tin and what they should be having think it’s 5 x 5oz bottles a day every 4-6 hours, if you work out what that total would be in a day I bet your baby is having the same just in smaller amounts at a time and more frequent. Don’t worry this drove me insane for weeks😂🙈

It’s driving me insane too! Haha I read something between 20 to 32oz a day they should be on but she’s pushing about 18oz at the min and it’s just concerning me but the health visitor literally has just told me not to worry and that’s it, she was switched from SMA to a hypoallergenic milk because she was having the runs for about a month, I had to push for it I was told over and over again for that month that the runs were normal but her poo was even worse on that milk so gone back to SMA but having the runs again so not sure if that’s got something to do with it but my gp and HV are useless I keep getting fobbed off no matter what I’m saying 😩 so I just don’t know what to do!

Does she have any other symptoms of anything? Still lots of wet and dirty nappies? No temperature, same temperament (not more irritable) no rashes?

Keep an eye on her weight. If it continues to drop, go to the GP.

She’s had a cold for about a 2 months too, sneezing and coughing a lot - once again been told that’s normal when I clearly don’t think it is - she does have wet nappies but went to change it now after this mornings bottle and she’s been sick everywhere and no wet nappy in the 7 hours shes been asleep, honestly my gp and HV are useless and I’ve taken her to Pediatrics before and once again fobbed off, I sound like a crazy mum but just so sick of being told everything is normal 😩

Sounds like reflux. A cold wouldn’t last that long! My DD had terrible reflux and was always stuffy, sneezing and coughing.

Mammy55 · 26/11/2021 07:57

Don’t ignore your gut!!!! Does sound like my baby I had to change to the allergy milk but nappies were bad for a week or two due to the change and then I bought some infant gaviscon you just add to the feed (obvs checked with pharmacist for babies age etc) if your gut is telling you something is off then don’t ignore it. But while all this was going on my baby did have a dry nappy over night once I was really concerned but his mouth was moist and he didn’t seem dehydrated but I syringed some cooled boiled water into his mouth just to get some extra liquid in and that seems to help. Just about 5ml couple of times a day, he was like this for about two weeks off his milk and he’s made a massive change the last few days it’ll get better

damnedifido20 · 26/11/2021 08:52

@Mammy55 did you stay on the hypoallergenic milk? She was going number 2 after every bottle with the hypo milk and it was horrible she was crying and things so did it for a good few days before changing her back but I’m going to ring the gp again now because I just feel so fed up of not being listened to at this point! I’ve gone back to the SMA now so not sure what to do 😩 thank you there is some hope here! Haha just want her to be okay!

Hi OP, I don't want to dismiss your concerns but I can see you've already received a lot of medical opinions who don't seem to believe there is an issue here. I just wanted to add to this that whilst I can't see your baby, you are describing a lot of normal newborn behaviour - coughing and sneezing fairly frequently is common and normal in newborns, both mine have done this. The coughing can often be mild reflux or both mine often do it when breastfeeding as I have a forceful let down in the early weeks! The 'runs' - I'm not sure what you mean by this as runny stools are also normal for newborns. Finally crying and straining when doing bowel movements is also normal - it's called infant dyschezia and is just a symptom of newborns having immature digestive systems. None of those things suggest any medical problem and none would require treatment.

Having said that - significant reduction in feeding habits, dry nappies and stalling weight gain are all cause for concern so I'd continue to push for medical advice about these things. Dehydration in an infant in particular can be a medical emergency so don't hesitate to go straight to A&E if you're ever concerned about this aspect.

Ask for an opinion on cardiac and obstructive bowel issues from the pediatrician. If you dont like the pediatrician, ask for a second opinion from a different group. Are you close enough to go up to London?
