Cloth is over. I don't know if it is forever, but definitely for the forseeable future

So.

The various eco ones don't give a decent fit and I end up with poo up backs, or tabs breaking etc.

Pampers = Nice fit, stretchy sides, but feel sort of crunchy and cost a bit more.

Huggies = Stretch and fit not quite so good, but not crunchy as much and are a smidge cheaper.

Supermarket own = Not tried with nappies, but I know with pull ups I have always ended up back with pampers or huggies.

Is there some better nappy out there, or do I do the toss up depending on how I feel at the time?

I have scaNned through the thread and I am of the opinion - they are all bloody like cloth and everyone likes different ones and they suit different babies I was hoping that the one saving grace would be it being easier to make a decision

I use what ever is on offer at the time if I'm using them, usually Tesco or Huggies. Are you sure 4+ isn't leaking because they are too big? He isn't supposed to be able to get his hands inside it. Ds is in 4+ and he's huge compared to Flameboy.

That could be why then You want a pack of 4+?

I was completely baffled in the shop I think I just grabbed one I knew he fitted in the weight range for in the end

Nappyhatessantazone · 15/12/2007 21:27

oh i am so for you but your right to do whats best for your boys bits - i have tended to use pampers baby dry when i have too which is a couple of nights a week really these days, i find they smell less than the active fit one for some reason. Also you can always blag some vouchers to get a pound or 2 of here and there. A friend of mine who clearly doesnt support my cloth business lol totally raves about lidl nappies - says they are good and as cheap as chips.....

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 15/12/2007 21:29

My friend realised that her DS had rash whenever she did the shopping, and none when her DH did - she bought lidl, he bought pampers I have avoided them for that reason!

It is a bit after giving nursery nappy lessons though

OP posts:
NappyiswarmingtosantaZone · 15/12/2007 21:38

mmmm - oh dear (thats as helpful as i get lol!!). I think my nursery would be relieved. On fri i sent him in his first nappy as a weenotion pirate wrap (not wanting to rub salt in the wounds) and a bimble then the other 4 of the day were to be bumgenoius or fuzzis - obviously this change was far to much for the novice cloth users as they then proceeded to put the wrap over all his pockets - i didnt have the heart to correct them . Oh flamey - sell em and buy yourself a crate of galaxy choc! No i dont mean that - i think its time to get your lab coat out and do some freezing experiments.... I am tempted as i have some wiffy inserts on my rads tonight.

Jas · 15/12/2007 21:42

I'd be tempted to try freezing too before you start buying disps in bulk
Would you consider trying terries or prefolds that you can wash hotter?

CantSleighWontSleigh · 15/12/2007 22:37

at boy only being in a 4+ Jas. Dd is in a five.

Pampers here flame.

CantSleighWontSleigh · 15/12/2007 22:38

Which pampers is scrunchy? We use active fit.

Jas · 15/12/2007 22:51

I don't use them very often, and they do leak

ChasingSquirrelsUpTheXmasTree · 15/12/2007 23:05

pampers vouchers - don't give them away, most supermarket chains will take a coupon value off your shop regardless of whether you have brought the product - as long as they actually sell it. Slight thread hijack there!

Jojay · 15/12/2007 23:12

Asda nappies are my favourite, and beat Huggies and other brands (not Pampers) in Which? tests.

Aldi's own are surprisingly ok, and cheap at £5 for 50.

bunnyhohohunny · 15/12/2007 23:27

I use cloth most days, but when i dont I use nature baby nappies, and they have never leaked or anything.
then at night I use pampers babydry (I always seems to have coupons for money off them). I have never tried any others!!

ravenAK · 15/12/2007 23:38

Hiya,

Just to say we had a similar problem with dd & went disposable for a month (no idea which sort, dh does the shopping).

Now back on cloth with no problems, evenings & weekends (weekdays she's with MIL who has no truck with such grubby hippy nonsense, washed her last nappy in 1978 & isn't starting again now ).

Fleece-lined stuffables from bear behinds seem to be OK, or fleece liners in totsbots - totsbots in the raw (especially line/radiator dried) still make her a bit pink & are best avoided. If I do see the slightest hint of redness I stick a disposable on next, which sorts it.

Not saying you shouldn't just crack on with the sposies for ds's bum's sake - just that I too thought cloth was over & it's turned out not to be so...

Strange things, babies' bums. Ds used to get appalling rashes in disposables & was fine when we went full time in cloth!

bunnyhohohunny · 15/12/2007 23:42

do you boost them? ds used to get awful nappy rash while in cloth, but then I began to boost them, or use fleece liners, alongside boot's liners. They are the driest liners I have found.

ravenAK · 16/12/2007 00:01

I just cut up a cheap fleece blanket to line the totsbots - else the roughness of the towelling chafes her.

It's not a perfect solution - if I'm honest, she's like your ds & the OP's in that she naturally tends to get rashes in cloth but not disposables - but it works fine for evenings/overnight/weekends if I keep an eye on things & have disposables to hand in case of any rash.

EachPeachPearMum · 16/12/2007 00:13

We use nature 24/7- dd is in size 5, though I have no idea what she weighs- thats just the comfiest fit for her- she is pretty lean, but with a pot belly.

Used tried pampers when she was newb, but she always leaked out the side- urine too- she was just too narrow for them.

Can't remember the last time her nappy leaked- seriously, it must be 18 months ago, but its like cloths ones- you'll find a cut that suits, and foreswear all others...

I like nature- they are not plasticky, and don't contain chlorine, and are biodegradeable (though my authority has energy generation from incineration) I also feel for not going with the re-useable, even though I assembled a reasonable collection . The real plus is the fact that until 16 months she had never had nappy rash, and then, only because she had a very nasty ear infection, and anti-biotics, never-ending poo etc).

And you can get pull-ups- Waitrose sell them, though I think I'm going to go straight to knickers when the time comes, as she is already fully aware when she needs to use the loo/potty she just refuses to do so.

The only negative is the cost- they are more expensive than other brands. (Yeah dd- we really need to do that toilet training now darling!)

And for some weird reason dd insists that the lady on the top of the packet is 'Mama' even though she looks nothing like me.

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 16/12/2007 01:55

we use disposables if we go away for a few days. i have used:

boots
asda
morrisons
sainsbury's
tesco
pampers
huggies
lidl

they all leaked.

i have since used with success:

superdrug
aldi
somerfield
wilkinsons

ds apparently has cheap taste like his mother i'm not complaining!!

NappiesGaloriaInExcelsis · 16/12/2007 08:12

nature pull ups are rubbish.

nature nappies are great imo.

but pampers/huggies (and various own brand copies) are stretchier (and shouldnt leak if youre putting the right size on right - do you need a sposie demonstrator to come round and show you how??

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 16/12/2007 10:28

lmao @ a sposie demonstrator!!!

I will try the freezing, and I will go get some boots liners (he reacts to fleece ) - I used to use those with DD and loved them, but I had forgotten about them since! (They are the ones that feel sort of satiny aren't they?)

Over Christmas I will probably leave it all - give myself one less thing to worry about.

Hi,
So sorry about your cloth problems. I was having the most horrid nappy rash with my bamboozles. The ammonia smell was just eye watering & nose burning in the morning without going near her. It was burning her skin which ending up being infected. Any way, after trying every cream & natural remedy known to mankind for her skin & trying all known ways to strip nappies of detergent residue I tried washing in washing soda at 60 after a normal fairy non-bio wash with an extra rinse at the end. It worked a treat, no ammonia smell at all & no rash. At the same time the washing machine broke, the fix it man said it hadn't been rinsing properly which would have caused the build up in the first place. I kept the washing soda washes going for about a week after the machine got fixed & now just do a normal fairy non-bio wash & haven't had a problem since.
Sorry if already mentioned, but might be worth a try

thebluefoxategreensocks · 17/12/2007 21:57

Rashes from cloth nappies are really annoying if you (like me!) love using cloth! I think I posted on here recently about odd spots/redness my little girl was getting from cloth and it was making her really sore, tho nothing compared to the awful rash ur little boy had! Poor thing! I put her off & on in disposables and it would go away when she was in them, but I think maybe I was putting her back in cloth too soon, before it completely went away. So I recently had her in dispos for about 2 full weeks and it entirely went away and she's been back in cloth for just over 1 week with no problems yet (well, nothing major - the odd spots, but maybe she always got occasional spots - nothing too bad anyway). So I'm hoping the switch back to a no-brand non-bio is better than the Persil that I was using at the time when she had the rash and maybe that was the source of the problem. I didn't do any stripping of the nappies or boil washes - just tried to use less soap & different brand.

As for brands of disposables, I have tried quite a few different ones. I end up using them when we go away for holidays or a weekend to see my family, as it's not very easy to take cloth for 2 babies when we have a tiny car etc.

I think Tesco are the best - the purple packs, and mine both take a 4 (I think it is). Obviously, if you're used to the leak-proof ness of cloth (such as ME Airflow wraps) then you'll never be satisfied with disposables! When I had tiny babies, with the messy bf poo, I only ever had very messy disasters when we were away from home & using disposables!! I had really bad experiences with Lidl ones - they just didn't fit around the back/wasit (big gaps) and were certain to leak in my experiences. So I'd go for the Tesco ones if I were you. I think I've had more leaks with Pampers too, compared with Tesco. Tried Huggies once or twice with newborn & weren't too bad, but for the price and quality together, I don't think you can get better than Tesco. Tho I'll admit that I don't know what other supermarkets (Asda, Morrisons etc) ones are like, as we only have a Tesco here.

Do hope you get it sorted & can use lovely cloth again! But I agree, babies well being must come first!

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 18/12/2007 20:18

Nappies are in the freezer atm. I have bought the size down in pampers now to try, hoping to give cloth one last try after Christmas

My dd deveoped a nasty rash after I washed them with fairy non-bio and persil non-bio. I now use Surecare and she never gets a rash now. I also give the nappies an extra rinse.

Why don;t you give it a go before you give up on them totally?
