Mix feeding - what do you do?

Hey - first time mum here to a one month old trying to figure out a sensible approach to mixed feeding.

For context DS was in hospital for most of the first month so during that time he was getting expressed milk and formula from a bottle with a bit of breastfeeding when I was able. He was on a pretty tight schedule of three hourly feeds of fixed amounts but moved to 'infant-led' feeding when he was well enough.

When home I tried breastfeeding, expressing and giving the odd bottle of formula as that is what he'd been having in the hospital.
But expressing along with breastfeeding seemed a bit mad so I've dropped the expressing over the last two days and I'm just breastfeeding but with one or two bottles of formula as well (at night and mid-day).

My issue is I'm not sure he is getting enough food (although I feed on demand and his nappies seem full enough) and I'm not sure if I'm timing things that well.

For variously reasons I don't think exclusively breastfeeding is right for me and I quite like that with formula his dad or someone else can give him the odd feed if I'm not about.

So my question is - if you mix-feed then what kind of schedule do you work to and why?

Thanks in advance!

I’m on month 3 of successfully mixed feeding my second DC. My advice would be to pick a number of feeds per day and stick to it. I found with my first I would worry he wasn’t full enough when he fussed at the boob and offer a bottle which meant breastfeeding declined he was fully formula fed.

This time I have persevered through the cluster feeding and fussiness and DC has her one bottle of formula of an evening with DH and the rest is BF. Good luck!
