How to help constipated 6 month old

Back on Mumsnet again with another baby related question!

My 6 month old is very constipated, she has only had one bowel movement in the past 2 days and it was extremely solid, she had a lot of difficulty passing it and was very upset. She was also up a lot lastnight crying trying to pass wind. Does anyone know of anything I could give her to help soften things up?

She's always struggled with bowel movements since 3 weeks old, she had colic, cmpa & acid reflux. She only ever has one bowel movement a day, but usually they are a normal baby poo constancy. However, like I said, recently they've been very constipated and I can see she is in discomfort with it.

She's had cooled boiled water & the GP doesn't seem too concerned .. as usual!! So once again, I've turned to Mumsnet in hope someone can help.

We used a spoon of pure apple juice in water.

Pear and prune purées helped my DD

Have you started weaning? "P" foods help so prunes, plums, peaches. I've always found a satsuma/tangerine helps as well. Look at the foods you're giving too - things like Banana, cheese and eggs can cause them to be a bit bunged up.

Warm bath and bicycle legs have helped mine with wind.

@RedwineforSantaplease I'm careful with the foods I give her as I don't want to upset her tummy further. She's had porridge, banana, purée prunes & avocado so far. I'll try and limit the banana!

@frodojodo
I would of give my nieces and nephews an once of look warm water with a freshly squeezed mandarin in it helped all the time.

Dried apricots minced with lots and lots of water. Very sweet and has a wonderful effect...much like prunes!

If the constipation began when you started weaning then maybe cut down on the amount of food that you give her and give her more milk instead.

My DS has been constipated lately because I’ve gone back to work and when I’m away he doesn’t drink enough milk and he won’t drink any water. At the weekends, when he has more milk and less solid food, his bowel movements pass much more easily.

I did a weaning course with a paediatric dietician and she recommended adding in red lentils to food to prevent constipation - you can cook them on their own and freeze or add into meals once or twice a week. It’s worked a treat for my baby - no constipation at all since we’ve started.

Ella’s Kitchen prune puree. No idea why that one specifically works, but it does. Even used it myself after the birth of DD2.
