2 year old absolutely refusing to wear coat/jacket....help!

My 2 year old has an epic melt down everytime I attempt to get her to wear a coat. I've tried bodywarmers, softer fluffy style jackets, winter coat, even a thicker cardigan and she still refuses. Literally sounds like I am murdering her and if I do manage to get it on her then she tugs at it, pulls and screams once we've left the house until it's off. It's not been that cold so far but I'm dreading winter! Any tips? (I've giving her a choice of coats...she just says no to any).

I bought my then 2yo DS a Hatley jacket from Amazon. He loved tractors so loved his tractor jacket.

Don't force her.

Just keep the jacket with you for when she wants it

She probably gets too hot and irritable in it

We had this with our 2 year old, simple let her go out without a coat and I think she'll soon be changing her mind, my dd1 did anyway. Take the pressure off and be like fine have it turned way let's go out and see how it feels without a coat 😁 xx

Just take it with you. If strangers judge, hand them the coat and brightly suggest that they have a try. It will either work (in which case yay) or they will back away and maybe think twice about making a judgy comment again (double yay)

My eldest is my most sensitive one in terms of sensory things and is just the same now. My toddler is no trouble to get a coat on, even if he's in a mood you can eventually persuade him. It wasn't crap parenting, he just really hated coats that much.

What about a body warmer type jacket? Until it gets too cold for that. One are the same, both boys, go outside and take hats, coats off etc.

Take it with you. Pick your battles. My DD is just 4 and this is the first year she’s been happily and voluntarily putting on coat, gloves, hats.

My worst coat refuser spent the winter before he turned three in short-sleeved t-shirts. He never, ever, ever got ill. Not even a sniffle.

To be totally honest i hate wearing coats and I'm not sure many people actively enjoy coats. That's why we have heating inside and don't wear coats all the time.
For 2 year old it's bizarre to them to put on a coat when you're inside as there's no existing discomfort.
We just take it with us and after a while our 2 year old says "windy" and that means time to offer the coat.
It's only adults who insist on getting dressed up in anticipation of being cold, toddlers like to live on the edge, so let them!
Good luck.

Sorry that was exaggeration i don't hate coats but give me a warm enough day and I'll be much happier not to have to wear it!

That's probably it in a nutshell.

Of the many coats and jackets my refuser has including lovely new ones, of varying thicknesses, and a bashed in hand me down that was kept as a spare for the park.
His jacket of choice is the bashed in one.

Bare in mind big jackets and coats shouldn't be used in car seats it can be easier to just do the mad dash from house to car and use the jacket as a blanket

immersivereader · 19/11/2021 02:19

Put the coat on backwards. Zip it up.

Let her roll on the floor screaming for five mins, then she'll be over it.

Job's a good un

I haven’t voluntarily worn my own coat this year. I just run hot. Hate having to put my super-thin no-padding rain mac on if it’s pissing down.

No idea how people actually walk in these duvet coats in 10° heat.

Don’t push it, just have it with you.

rrhuth · 19/11/2021 03:22

Sometimes a thread has a clear view and I'm joining the majority saying take a coat with you.

If you offer a choice of 'wear a coat or stay home' then you have to stay home if they pick that option.

Jsgdud · 19/11/2021 07:37

Thank you all! Will just take the coat with us and I won't force it (I wasn't sure whether I should be forcing it - which I didn't really want to do as results in both of us feeling miserable). Will also get some thermal vests.
