Barking cough but not croup?

DD (2.5) always seems to have suffered with upper respiratory infections. In her life her coughs have always sounded like croup coughs. She's been fine from April until October, 4 weeks ago she had a really nasty cough that made her sick. Last week I noticed her coughing a few times in the night so we were given both brown & blue inhalers to give her twice a day. She's now got this awful barking cough (no temp or cold) took her to GP surgery yesterday to be told it's croup & given soluble steroids. I didn't think it was croup as her coughs always sound barking but thought anything to try to relieve her symptoms for her. After taking, these certainly decreased the coughing, however this started back up 45 mins ago. I feel very sleep deprived & just a bit helpless not knowing what is going on or how to help poor coughing child. Anyone else's child ever always seem to get a barking cough with any experience to share?
