Has anyone noticed a change in their babies after weaning off Omeprazole?

My son has been on omeprazole since he was about 8 weeks old after a horrific time with silent reflux.
I recently weaned him off (at 11 months) I did it steady and very cautiously!
However, What’s amazing is he’s now started sleeping through, when he was waking for a bottle every night, and he childminder (who he sees twice a week) has just commented on how happier he seems in himself. He’s also eating much bigger portions of food!
All of this is great - trust me I’m not complaining! But what I wondered was ‘is this because he’s off his meds? Or just a coincidence?’ Just wanted your thoughts/experiences!

I’m an adult on omeprazole and I do find it an appetite suppressant.

I'm on esomeprazole, which is stronger. Since I've been taking it I've lost weight and feel generally uninterested in food. I've also noticed some difficulty getting to sleep, which is unusual for me.

Hi @Rara88Cas

This situation sounds so similar to mine, however we haven’t weaned him off his omeprazole yet. My little one started taking Omeprazole at around 5 weeks old (it worked great), however since starting solid food he’s struggled to eat much.
Last week due to covid our chemist had no pharmacist for 2 days (when I was due to collect his next bottle of omeprazole) so subsequently he missed 2 days of his medicine, during those days I felt he slept better and ate a little more. I’ve spoken to my GP, and she suggested halving his dose every other day to see if I can spot a pattern, I am also going to chat with her in a few weeks about weaning him off all together.

How long did it take for you to wean your little one off omeprazole? How much did you reduce the dose by? Did he suffer any acid rebound? How is he doing now without it?

Hiya, We had been on a dose of 10ml for most of the time. We dropped it to 7ml, then 5ml and 2.5ml then alternated days of no dose and 2ml. We did each stage for a week. We did have a break in the middle when he was poorly (not reflux related) so we stuck with omeprazole at 7 ml for two weeks as we didn't want any other issues for him. We didn't find there was any bounce back but we monitored him closely and if he seemed uncomfortable we out a sachet of gaviscon in his bottle.

He's been off both since early December (I think) and we've nothing bad to report, it's been great so far with him sleeping through now most nights!

Hi,

Oh that’s good to hear, he’s currently on 7ml dose. I’m going to talk to my GP and discuss with her the way forward.
He’s 10 months at the moment and eating a minimal amount of solid food, he always starts off keen at each feeding time, but after 2-3 spoonfuls he’s had enough, he will play and suck finger food, but that’s it.
It’s nice to hear positive story regarding bounce back, because all I seem to have read so far is negative things.
Thank you so much for replying back to my message.
