Childrens books without a mum in it

My niece will never know her mum as she died 2 years before she was born to a surrogate. She is being raised by her dad (my bro-in-law) alone. I want to buy a kids book for her that shows life without a mum, but is not one that tells you to treasure the memories of her once she is gone. As of course she will never have met her mum (my sis) Can anyone help?

Do you want information book? Usborne has one called All About Families which talks about all sorts of families in different shapes and sizes but I would be surprised if it specifically talks about this situation as its very unusual.

We have ‘My dad’ by Anthony Browne which is sweet. Actually he also wrote ‘Gorilla’ which is lovely but the dad character isn’t that nice! I’m sure there’s loads more but I can’t think…

Have a look at George and Bartholomew.
My DC loved these.

I think the Princess and the Peas - and possibly other stories by that author - only feature a Dad. Dogs Don't Do Ballet is another one which I'm pretty sure just features a Dad.
It's a good few years since I've read them though so I may be wrong.

Wow helpful …

CorpusCallosum · 11/11/2021 21:33

So not what you're looking for I don't think but my DD loves 'Peck Peck Peck' which is a really ordinary board book but it's a daddy and baby bird rather than a mummy which sooooo many books default to.

Also love the Emma Dodd series which are beautiful and don't seem to mention the gender of the parent character.

Heruka · 11/11/2021 21:34

What an unnecessary, unkind thing to say Hydrangea.

Another classic one is ‘guess how much I love you’, the big rabbit is male I’m sure.

Also, in Gruffalos Child; isn’t the parent a dad? That’s such a sweet story

Yes. I was going to suggest this too. A dad and daughter.

Yes the Princess and the Peas is a lovely book. No mum or mum mentioned just a lovely dad- daughter relationship. If you look closely at 1 illustration there is a small photo in the background of dad and a woman.

So we can discuss that at another time, in another place, when we are not addressing the needs of a tiny person who already exists.

How ironic that you with a 'perfect' family of 2 parents should have been brought up as so rude - Op I hope you ignore these idiots
sqirrelfriends · 11/11/2021 21:52

Snowflake in my pocket. It's a really sweet book about a bear and a squirrel. Not really a dad, but definitely a father figure.

Finding Nemo.

Another vote for Can't You Sleep Little Bear. One of my DCs favourites when they were small. There is another one with the same two bears, I think it's something like Let's Go Home Little Bear. The Storm Whale is about a little boy and his Dad. I can't think of any with a girl and Dad though.

I was just looking for nice stories rather than family advice info, thanks though.

My daughter loves Me and My Dad. It’s about a daddy bear waking their cub up in the morning, and all the nice things they do together until bedtime.
