Would it be unusual for a Year 7 child to only have an Xbox 360?

Hello.
My DS will be starting secondary school in September. Primary has been a challenge for him with friendships as he's a bit geeky whereas boys in his class are all into football and fighting and a lot of girls who were friends have become funny having a friend of the other sex. I'm really hoping that he will make some good friends when he starts secondary and hoping to facilitate this as best as I can, encouraging him to invite friends round etc.
At the moment he has a Kindle which he enjoys playing Minecraft on. We have an Xbox 360 which DH got from a skip (with permission!) and periodically DS will play on it for a couple of nights in a row and then leave it for weeks. However he has been asking for an Xbox 1 for Christmas, though not especially regularly.
Initially I thought it wasn't worth it as he mightn't get much use of it considering the cost, but I'm wondering if it might be helpful to have one when friends come round. I know it doesn't matter but I wouldn't want his friends to be mocking him for 'only' having an old model.
Just wondering if most Year 7s would have something like this and if you would recommend? Any tips on what I need to look for when buying would also be greatly appreciated.

I have a daughter and she has an Xbox 1, she likes to game but does go out a lot as well. I definitely think it would be a good investment for Christmas especially as he has mentioned it before. Boys certainly like to game so would also be good for new friends he makes and when he has them round to the house.

Xbox 1 isn't that expensive now. You could probably get everything you need for 150 quid pre owned bar games and then they're pretty cheap pre owned

My yr7 boy has a Xbox 1and it’s the focus of his social life-maintaining links with sone primary kids who went to a different school and adding new people from secondary-they all play on a minecraft realm after school for an hour or two and it’s been a boon, much as it goes against the grain because I want him to be playing out in the woods!!

My yr9 and yr6 kids don't have any Xbox or gaming machine. They have an old laptop for minecraft but there is no gaming when friends come over. They chat or do board games instead

Thank you. It's not so much the cost, more as Mrs Wooster says, I'd rather he was out in the fresh air or reading but it seems like time for me to get a grip and try and figure out the complicated world of Xboxes!
Think we might get it as a "family present" too so it can be in a shared space and everything and other 2 DC can have a go occasionally.
