Night time nappy changes- son freaks out??

My son had recently been soaking through his nappy and sleeping bag at night and when we try to change him he absolutely freaks out.

I mean screaming till the point he is having a panic attack. Trying to jump off the changing table. Won't lie still.

This obviously means the changing takes far longer than it needs to and then he is wide awake.

He isn't great at getting a nappy change during the day but will lie still with distraction but at night time he just loses it.

Why is this ?!

We have tried cloth nappies, bigger size nappies, more absorbent nappies but he still soaks through in a matter of hours sometimes.

Sounds weird but have you tried a tapped nappy with an additional pull up nappy over the top?

NotMaryWhitehouse · 11/11/2021 02:35

We have a couple of toys hanging above his changing table that he only sees when he's there- would that help? Also, I find he's especially upset if he's not really awake when we change him, so I talk to him gently while cuddling him until he opens his eyes.

Being screamed at in the middle of the night is not fun!

Mine went through a phase like this (although not just at night) and it was a fear of falling that came out of nowhere. Changing on the floor fixed it. Could you change him earlier in the night whilst leaning into his cot, with the hope that he'd be in a deeper sleep cycle and won't actually wake at all? Maybe wear only a top to bed so the nappy is easily accessed?

Are you sure the nappies aren’t too big rather than too small? Is the nappy actually saturated or is the wee just running out of the side because the leg holes are too loose?

dazeddanndconfused · 11/11/2021 03:13

Would changing him in bed be more comfortable and less disruptive to him during the night?

Try putting disposable bed mats down with double sided tape to keep them in
Place so you won't have to strip the bed if he leaks.

Try changing him before you go to bed if there is already some wee in there so it doesn't get overloaded later on in the night

Wagglerock · 11/11/2021 07:41

I used to change mine in the cot while he was still asleep. I'd do it when I went to bed at about 11pm so that saved any 3am soaking throughs.

SleighBells21 · 11/11/2021 07:45

How old is he?

Are you stripping him and putting him in a cold changing mat?
He may be feeling the cold.

As pp I changed whilst he was in his cot

Kuachui · 11/11/2021 07:49

i would try changing him whilst asleep, in the bed rather than a changing table. also try a pull up over a nappy,

We do this, only thing that works with my DD

I would also experiment with changing him before it's soaked through to see how that goes.

I feed my DS on the bed, then after his feed he rolls onto his tummy and falls asleep. Once he’s asleep I change him while he’s on his tummy (tricky I know) before I roll him onto his back and put him in his cot. He’ll sleep through nappy changes as long as he’s got a full stomach and he’s on his tummy or side the whole time. During the daytime he urinates as soon as the nappy is off but at night he doesn’t do it. Instead of using vests and sleepsuits, have him in a top and trousers so you only need to change the trousers when the nappy leaks.

JoannaKP · 11/11/2021 19:40

@GemmaRuby saturated! He's a pee monster. They are like soaked. Sometimes in the morning they are so full they have burst and all the crystals are all over him.

@dazeddanndconfused in unfortunately too short to reach into his cot and change him like this. I just about manage to lie him down in the cot without falling in myself 🤣🤣

@SleighBells21 he is one. I have to strip him as he is soaked through. Sleeping bag and all.

It's not every night but it's becoming more frequent.

@Rno3gfr @Kuachui I will try a pull up over the top of the nappy to see it that helps.

Are his vests too snug? Try next size up, a tight vests can cause leaks!
