1 year old hand, foot and mouth

My 12 month old DS has hand, foot and mouth. I'm not sure how he got it! We have had a terrible few days/nights and yesterday he developed spots. My DH took him to the Drs who told us what it was. Anyway, my poor DS has spots on his face, up his nose, on his arms, hands, all down his legs, on his bottom and the soles of his feet. It really is quite horrible to look at and my heart aches. Is this normal? I never expected it to look so bad! Any tips to get through? He is off his food but is drinking some milk. He's had long naps today as he has not been sleeping at night. Also, how contagious is it? We are supposed to be having dinner with with inlaws on Friday and my FIL is in his late 70s and quite vulnerable. So we are thinking of cancelling just in case. FTM here so any help greatly received x

Oh god yes it's fucking awful. DD had it twice, really bad both times.

Tips: lots of water, calpol and sleep. Very tough I know. But over quickly, probably less than a week. Very contagious though!

I hope you and your DH don't get it. I had it, it was awful.

Yeah, don't see your FIL.

Ds1 had it at 12 months and ended up needing steroid cream for his spots as he was covered everywhere but his abdomen. He survived on chilled custard, sugar free jelly and ice lollies to soothe his mouth. It was awful. Dc4 has not long had it and has been the same. His nails are now falling off, ds1 lost his finger and toenails in the weeks afterward. DH caught it and was very unwell. Lots of hydration, calpol and feed them whatever will soothe and pacify.

Yep, for my LO it wasn't so much hand, foot and mouth more like arms, legs and bum. The doctor suggested double base to keep the skin from getting worse and that a side it was just calpol to treat the fever, lots of cuddles and attempts at feeds.
I'd cancel your meal, it is very contagious. In our house three out of four got it and actually the fourth had a sore mouth too.

My dd had this when she turned 1, we had to cancel her party, it looked awful but when it started to clear up it went really quickly so hang in there - I still remember it being one of the longest weeks of my life! Look after yourself as much as you can. Make things easy any way you can think of, it won’t be for long.
My aunt got it from somewhere else a few months after that and she was very unwell, I agree with previous pp I wouldn’t risk FIL.

Thank you everyone for your advice. I will cancel the meal. Just not worth the risk! DS actually slept for 5 hrs last night so I'm a little more human today (just!). Thanks again for helping a first time Mama out!
