12 month old waking up at 4am

My DD just turned 12 month old and recently started waking up at 4an and refuses to go back to sleep. Doesn't cry, just up and awake which then turns into crying because I think she gets bored in the crib but it's way too early to get up yet. Is this another regression? What can I do to help her fall back to sleep as she doesn't need night feeds anymore and if we pick her up, she just wants to be up to play. Any suggestions on how we can tackle this?

What are her naps like in the day? You might need to shorten them a bit.

At this age, my daughter was having 45 minutes in the morning and two hours in the afternoon.

Is she cold or hungry? What tine is she going to bed?

Strawberries4days · 10/11/2021 10:59

She sometimes have 2 naps but they range from 40 mins or 1 hour and a half for one and the other. Was never good at napping for long. I am thinking she's waking up hungry so going to try with a later tea tonight to see if that settles it. Definitely not cold because the heating comes on through the night and is in a 2.5 tog. She usually goes to bed at half 7 or 7 if she doesn't have a second nap as she gets so tired

I would say maybe cold as well

Ds is 18 months. In sleeping bag, pjs and short sleeve vest. Was waking up the last 2 weeks at 4/5am. Swapped to long sleeve vest under pjs, added thick socks, and blanket over sleeping bag ( although I think he moves this off at some point) and he’s now sleeping until 6.30am. Bedroom usually around 22/23 at bedtime and dropped to 20 at 4am which must wake him

Eldest had a looooong phase of this from about 9 months. At 11 months she dropped to 1 x 28 minute nap a day (never went longer) and the morning wake got closer to 5am. When she started dropping her final nap at 18/20 months the morning wake gradually became closer to 6am. Now she’s almost 3, sometimes wakes at 5am if she has an accidental doze in the car the day before, but mostly would happily sleep in if her dad didn’t wake her up with his 6am shower!

Im sure there are lots of people out there who have tackled this with adjusting bedtime etc, but for us it seems DD1 only needs 12 hours sleep a day and prefers that to be all in one hit.

Gro Clock helped enormously from around 18 months to introduce the no shouting until the sun comes up rule.

I'd try moving her bedtime to 7.30/8. Add some supper, like porridge abs an extra layer and see how you get on.

Yes maybe too early bedtime? Or it’s just mine that doesn’t need much sleep, he’s rarely asleep before 8.30pm but always bouncing energy by 6/6.30am. With just one 1-2hr nap ( usually 1hr)

Strawberries4days · 10/11/2021 18:33

We've done one big nap before lunch and some porridge just now so we'll see how she does for her bed time at half 7. We've also had a playdate as well so I'm hoping this will do the trick. Thanks everyone for their help!
