How to introduce a routine – four month old

I appreciate that lots of people will say our baby is too young but I’d like to start looking at introducing some form of routine into my day for our nearly 4 month old. Our baby gets overtired and so would be useful to avoid meltdown situations.

Please can anyone advise as to how they started introducing routine into the day?

Wake windows are helpful to stop you teetering into over tired-dom. Have a Google about it if you aren't sure on the principles. It works really well with our daughter and also gives some structure to the day, sort of a loose routine.

We just went for it! I also have a 4 month old and started a routine a few months ago just because I also noticed he would get so upset and have so many meltdowns. Started by focusing on bedtime routine, bath, bottle, bed. We aimed for 8pm and slowly brought this forward over time as it suited him better and he was overtired by that time.
I just advise to start gently with one aspect of the day and then the rest should fall into place!
My LOs naps are still quite all over the place but one in the morning, one at lunch and one in the afternoon. Just varies during his needs

Good luck!! We found our baby really needed a routine and we appreciated it too! Xx

In terms of sleep & napping - the Huckleberry app has been invaluable.

It calculates wake windows based on age & will give you a "sweet spot" of when to put baby down for a nap. Before that I was flying blind, missing sleep cues & Baby was ending up a tired mess.

I saw it recommended on here when my DS was 3 months old & we still use it now - he is 18 months.

95% of the time it has been bang on when DS would be ready to sleep.

I paid for the huckleberry sweet spot notification. I only pain for the month then cancelled. It was right 90% of the time and really helped me work out wake windows. My boy is 4 months and he's in a fantastic routine.
