What age did your babies start batting/grasping toys?

My DD is approaching 12 weeks and still doesn't pay much attention to any toys. My baby book tells me that by 3 months she should be batting at objects and grasping things? Which other than my hair she doesnt do. Not sure if I should be worried or not!

Thanks

I think between 3-4 months is the norm so plenty of time. DS1 was at 3 months but DS2 more like 4.5 months. Don't worry 🙂

My DD is 6.5 months and I think she's only been doing it for a month or so. They're all different, it's hard not to compare and worry I know, but having my second baby has taught me that. She's doing everything at different times and in a different order!

About 16 weeks.
Dd1 was about 5.5 months but she was 5 weeks prem so really about just over 4 months

DS is 4 months and only been interested in toys, beyond looking at them, for maybe 10 days.

Yup, my 5 month old has only been batting at toys for a month at the most. She is now trying very hard to pass a toy between two hands too, the concentration on her face is magical!

Perhaps I should just burn the book and rely on mumsnet instead ! Thanks all.

My son started nearer the 4 months, he's 5.5 months now and grabs everything and shoved it in his mouth haha!

DailyRepeatGuarantee · 05/11/2021 19:18

Mine only started when I made sure they were low enough to be mistakenly batted xx

BertieBotts · 05/11/2021 19:24

My 11 week old is sometimes attempting to reach for things, but I wouldn't say batting at yet as such.

Don't worry, they get there in their own time. There is always a wide variation on milestones and books often just pick a random time frame within that to freak you out with!

As long as your baby is doing new things then it doesn't really matter what they are or in what order.

DS was batting and grasping the toys on his playmat at 5 weeks (and pulling my hair from birth). The other baby in my group only started batting toys at 3.5 months.

Mrsmch123 · 05/11/2021 21:25

About 16 weeks. I was a bit worried as he showed zero interest before that, now he bats at everything is able to reach for toys and take them from my hand. His hand eye coordination is fab now and he's only been doing it around two weeks. Once they learn a skill it's amazing how quick they become at perfecting it

Dr273 · 05/11/2021 21:48

DD2 is doing it now at 6weeks. We're both surprised as DD1 definitely wasn't until 3mo or later (at 3mo she was trying to crawl. She never sat or was interested in sitting...). Different babies huh

Chelyanne · 05/11/2021 22:17

Ours is 12wk too and not doing this yet, I'm not worried she is our 6th. She's finally nailed smiling though and chats to me.

4 months. Don’t worry at all every baby is different. They all get there eventually.
