17 month old - what am I doing wrong?!

Hello,

My DS was such a good boy, then one say he woke up FULL of all this energy. He's still a good boy in fairness but just non stop, especially with throwing things?!

He has been refusing his afternoon nap for some time now so I've given in and gone down to 1 nap. Problem is he keeps waking up at half 5 and is ready to start the day. I don't see how I can extend his wake-up time in the morning so that he doesn't have to stay up beyond 4/5 hours before bedtime. At the moment I try put him down at 11am, he's usually up just before 1pm and then bedtime at 7pm. I just can't cope with the early rising anymore. Is it just a phase or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Try pushing the nap back by 15 mins each week until he's sleeping later in the afternoon to begin pushing bedtime back. We're having to do this now to cut down to one nap (he's only 13months so a bit younger but I guess same principle?). That worked for us when we had a phase of about 3 months waking at 5.

Both mine dropped all naps at 18 months. My DS still woke at 5.30 every morning. We just used to bring him in with us and put the TV on. We could doze, he was safe.

You're not doing anything wrong, some children are early risers just like some adults are awake earlier than others.

DS dropped all his naps really early and he is still up between 5-6am every morning no matter how much time I spend tiring him out or wishing he would sleep in later.

I've just accepted my fate for now and adjusted my own bedtime to suit rather than try and continue to change something I cannot control.
