In all seriousness, yes. People can be spectacularly cruel, nitpicky, obtuse, critical and unnecessary.

But they're also kind, funny, informative, generous, thoughtful, selfless and wise.

nancybotwinbloom · 03/11/2021 20:01

I think it depends on peoples mods that day and also it's easy to read things the wrong way.

MollysDolly · 03/11/2021 20:07

Depends.

Quite frequently, the OP simply doesn't like what they're hearing, and gets professionally offended and starts declaring everyone rude.
Sort of, I came here to hear how right I was, and now I'm having my arse somewhat handed to me on the proverbial, and refuse to accept many impartial strangers pointing out that in fact, I am most likely wrong.

I like MN for its honesty. I like how it calls people out. It's been helpful on more than one occasion where I've been very blinkered. I'm more annoyed by the posters who start labelling posters who make very good points, just not in support of OP as nasty/rude/bully/bitter.

And then, yes, you do get the very occasional one that's just plain rude.

I absolutely agree with this. I have been on here for 18 years since dd was born and it has definitely got worse over the years as the site has grown in popularity. There is however many areas where people are lovely and supportive you have to look though!
Amundo · 03/11/2021 20:08

Yes, it makes me wonder what they're like in real life.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 03/11/2021 20:11

I also think MN has made me think differently as a woman, maybe things I would not have thought too much about and it is absolutely brilliant for this. Many are critical of MN and thats because it gives women a voice. Shame about the bitching at times but if you look beyond that there is so much to learn.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 03/11/2021 20:13

I've been on here on and off for probably a decade now.

I've had people be a dick to me for no reason, and I've also posted shitty things on occasion because I was in a bad mood, nothing really to do with the op themselves.

I think it's pretty representative of life on here. I find it easy to ignore the more knobbish posts though. If I was feeling very fragile I wouldn't be posting in AIBU, but I've definitely had massive support on other topics.

Bellyups · 03/11/2021 20:15

People are mainly honest. A very few can be rude, depending on what idiocy is happening.
Generally, as pp said, it’s usually the ones that don’t like anyone disagreeing with them that starts threads like the this one

LadyCampanulaTottington · 03/11/2021 20:16

NAMALT … not all mumsnetters are like that Grin

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 03/11/2021 20:16

They can be. One of the first threads I ever joined in with I got my arse handed to me. I closed the web page. Cried. Told myself it was a nest of vipers. Considered deregging or name changing. Realised they were right. Came back and apologised.
That was about 15 years ago. I've seen, and been on the receiving end of some vile comments since then.
I've also been unnecessarily rude. Usually because I'm already in a bad mood. I nearly always come back and apologise for that.

I've also seen, and received some of the nicest most caring support. I've been reduced to tears by the kindness of strangers on here. I remember once, many years ago, one MNetter going to pick another up in the middle of the night to help her escape DV.

It can be the best and the worst place.

sunsandwaves · 03/11/2021 20:17

@ABCeasyasdohrayme

Lol no I'm fully aware of this I just thought this was a place you could ask people for parenting tips and helpful advice not rude comments. Maybe I'm different and if I didn't have something helpful to say I wouldn't feel the need to comment. Must just be nicer than some hey

Mumsnet is just a snake pit of acid tongue vipers...yet it's weirdly an incredibly supportive place for women 🤷🏽‍♀️ gotta take the rough with the smooth. I've been on here since ds who's now 4 was born. Had my fair share of pile ons but it's also been a huge source of support through some of my darkest times.

I was joking with that comment op Smile

Post your threads and just take on board whatever you find useful.

As an old timer used to say on here all the time- we are all JUST WORDS ON A SCREEN 😂

nancybotwinbloom · 03/11/2021 20:25

I've had some good advice off here! When my ex h tried to bankrupt me the advice on here at the time saved me.

WandaVision2 · 03/11/2021 20:27

Yes because us women should just ‘be kind’

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 03/11/2021 20:31

must just be nicer than some hey

but not less passive aggressive!

WonderfulYou · 03/11/2021 21:13

Yes definitely.
Without sounding prejudice it used to be mainly mums talking about parent issues. Now there are a lot younger people without children. So I think a lot of the ruder comments are often from bored teens.

ANameChangeAgain · 03/11/2021 21:17

I try not to take stuff directed to me personally. Its just words from strangers who know nothing about me. I think somehow with it being written in black and white it does cut, and I wish people would sometimes think before they type.

SmallWaistFatFace · 03/11/2021 21:19

...it's the Internet
