AIBU told think that this is not tasteful and Hmm especially if you have young small kids in the house. Why would you want to show them how to commit suicide? And whilst you're at it the rest of the neighbourhood kids?

@DailyRepeatGuarantee

You don't need to tell them 'it's actually a representation of someone who has taken their own life through hanging'*

No but they wouldn't need to ask as it's pretty clear what it is Confused it's a stark obvious image that a kid isn't going to forget.

It might be obvious to an adult who is familiar with that imagery, but I don't think most small children would find it obvious what it is actually, because hopefully they haven't seen that before/are not aware that people hang themselves! Given that it's Halloween and there are decorations around, and it's made of bin bags I think some stuff about it being a decoration/monster etc would be believable to most children tbh.
DailyRepeatGuarantee · 31/10/2021 14:13

Maybe it's just triggering for me then. Sadly I know of two suicides and some attempted ones.

I was in a large family cafe last week that had fake decapitated heads complete with gore hanging from the ceiling. I thought that was a bit much.
What you're describing sounds horrific & deeply insensitive.

Does it need to be reported.

To whom? As a PP said, we don't ban statues of a man being crucified in this country- hanging is somewhat tame by comparison.

Jaikers · 31/10/2021 14:28

Oh. I have a witch made of bin bags hanging from an upstairs window. It’s hanging from the top of the hat not round the neck and it didn’t even occur to me that it would look like it had been hung 😳 We saw them round the soft play place earlier in the week and thought it was an easy decoration for the kids to make. It was meant to look like it was flying! Might have to take it down now!

WonderfulYou · 31/10/2021 14:30

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I’m struggling to see how people can find hanging wrong but costumes with knifes in their head or simply skeletons and ghosts of dead people ok.

beigebrownblue · 31/10/2021 14:39

I don't think it is funny either. Especially when teens suffering from self harm.

Not funny. It normalises suicide.
I would report.

Someone from Scotland was on the radio this week reminding people that the witch burnings. And the witch hangings were real and thousands of people died. This kind of thing very poor taste. Yes, I would take it down.

thats awful I agree
1forAll74 · 31/10/2021 14:43

Yes,that is a bad taste halloween idea.. This is not quite the same, but just read on local FB page here. A few people have made complaints, about some quite large pieces of black plastic netting stuff, strung up in some trees,in the village here, the big nets have big plastic spiders in them.. So complaints are, the nets may cause birds to get trapped in them, and possibly die,, and then after the one Halloween night, all the plastic rubbish, will maybe get left around, or blow away somewhere, or into the village pond.

WhoWants2Know · 31/10/2021 14:45

I think "hanged man" decorations have been associated with Halloween for a long time, but they took on a different connotation when people stopped hanging criminals. Now we associate hanging with suicide instead of execution, so it hits differently.

(In the States, I think would be viewed even worse than here.)

DailyRepeatGuarantee · 31/10/2021 14:45

It's when it's obvious hanging from neck it down looks awful.

It's basically this but hung from the neck and the head lolls downwards as a result, also with loose armsSad

Both my cousin (who I knew) and my aunt (who I didn’t) committed suicide by hanging.

My cousin was actually found by his brother and is still traumatised to this day.

Yeah this. Also people were really mumified in the past so mummies are out. There is a medical condiction which causes hair all over your face, so no werewoves please. Obviously anything about serial killers is out. Scary clowns are an offensive and untrue sterotype about a minority.

If we all stick to costumes and decoration which couldn't possibly offend anyone then I'm sure all the kids will have a lovely time.

NuffSaidSam · 31/10/2021 14:49

Pirates were (and are) also real and obviously killed loads of people so no pirates either.

LouScot · 31/10/2021 14:51

Off topic slightly but just sticking in my tuppence that the phrase "commit suicide" can be triggering and offensive to those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Commit often has very negative implications, commit a crime, commit murder etc and many mental health charities recognise this and prefer the term "died by suicide". Not having a go at anyone and @DailyRepeatGuarantee yeah, I'd not find that display you've mentioned remotely funny. If people are so distressed and distraught that the only option they can think of at that point in time is to take their own life then it's not something to mock up for cheap thrills at Hallowe'en

DailyRepeatGuarantee · 31/10/2021 14:52

How can you trivialise people being triggered by suicide like decor?

Sorry, I don't understand your question?

But, the pirate comment was in relation to witches, not suicide. Hope that clears it up.

Mustreadabook · 31/10/2021 15:10

Tbh it’s probably just string round the neck is the easiest way to put up a figure. My kids made a figure last year and wanted to hang it up for people to see, due to a similar thread as this I went to great lengths to find a different way to put it up but it would not have occurred to me otherwise I think.

Jaikers · 31/10/2021 15:11

Oh it’s down now and I hope nobody saw it that was offended by it. Obviously I am aware of the witch hangings but that didn’t occur to me any more than the suicide connection because it was just a witch riding her broomstick made by my 5 year old Blush

Mumteedum · 31/10/2021 15:21

@Jaikers that's totally inoffensive, honestly. It's not the same as the man sized effergies being hung by the neck!

Boudiccasback · 31/10/2021 15:27

Its just a decoration. I have cobwebs ans spiders outside my house, should I remove them due to being too scary for some?Hmm

Btw I went to a catholic school and the crucification terrified me as a child

insancerre · 31/10/2021 15:30

It’s not about suicide though
It’s a reminder of death by hanging - historical fact
It’s gruesome but that’s the point if Halloween
