Socks

Hi. Does anyone have a DC with sock issues? My DS is nearly 6 and for a year, every morning we have a meltdown about socks. He tells me they don't feel right, they hurt and are just not nice. He throws massive tantrums about wearing socks when they don't feel right. I have tried all different types and brands of socks, turning them inside out. In 3 weeks I have brought a total of 20 pairs of different socks and I'm at my wits end with it now. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks.

Have you tried him with some seamless socks? Assuming it's the seams causing the problem?

That's a great idea thank you. I will try anything to make mornings easier for us.

I can’t stand sock seams myself.

I’d let him wear sandals or go barefoot wherever possible. I wear sandals in the middle of winter and I go barefoot anywhere that doesn’t have too much broken glass around. Don’t worry too much if he gets chilblains or stubs a toe or cuts his foot.

If he has to wear socks and shoes at school then let him walk to school in sandals and change into socks and shoes at the school gate.

My ds is like this with socks and pants, we have drawers full of different brands.

Socks-seamless
Pants-peacocks seam free trunks

Are best we have so far

Yep.
My five year old is like this
All her clothes have to be on straight 😅

Chelyanne · 03/11/2021 16:45

Yep, I'd have a bigger meltdown than them so they lump the uncomfortable socks. No tolerance for fussy farts in this house.

My 9yo wears flat seamed socks, I’ve found some by chance in Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and M&S.

My 4yo just doesn’t wear socks unless it’s freezing, he’s not fussed about seams etc though

What an awful thing to say. Ever heard of sensory processing issues (often part of autism). The socks cause them actual pain - or the sensation is perceived as pain, at least. Are you comfortable causing ACTUAL PAIN to your children?

And as a parent, your job is to be a beacon of calm, de-escalating tense situations when your kids are struggling. Not 'have a bigger meltdown than them'.

I really don't think this was a helpful comment to post on a thread where a desperate parent is asking for help.

I can very much relate to this, OP. Age has improved things but socks have always been the single most difficult thing to get 'right'. The higher the anxiety levels (which are very high during key transitions like leaving home to go to school), the less ability there is to cope with sensory issues.

DD is now exclusively wearing Primark socks, the mesh sport footies from the adult range (she's almost a size 2 now, and they make them in size 2-5). Would never have thought she would like them, but one day she asked to try a pair of mine and has never looked back!

Will have to face the nightmare all over again next September, though, when she moves to secondary school and isn't in leggings and trainers anymore. :-)

Hello,

We had this problem, and we tried the CityofClouds school sock. Omg, amazing. No more meltdowns! They seem thicker than others and wash really well.

You can get them here www.sensorysmart.co.uk/city-of-clouds-bamboo-school-socks---bundle-of-5-pairs-23426-p.asp

Twounderfive83 · 26/11/2021 14:33

Yep! Not full on meltdowns but a lot of fussiness.

SpeedRunParent · 26/11/2021 17:53

Have you tried bamboo socks? They are so soft. My sensory DD loves them.

VanOwen · 26/11/2021 19:28

Yes! That is what I got on link above. They are really great quality, no seam. Ive tried sockshop ones but they were thin.

Hope the socks work like they did for me, just wish I knew about them sooner.

Startrite also do fleece lined wellies (have also seen them in lidl) - used to use these to get us outside without the sock battle when DD went through a phase of this, though obviously it depends where you are going. It also helped bringing DD to choose her own socks in m&s.
