Hi, hoping to get some recent views around Halstow primary in Greenwich - we quite like the school but was hoping to get some recent feedback as it’s been a while since their last inspection. Also trying to understand whether the leavers have a decent chance to get into a selective independent secondary at year 6 if they turned out to be academic enough and chose to apply (in the area / Dulwich schools, Eltham etc)? Our alternative would be a prep school but trying to figure out if it’s worth it… thanks in advance

I dont know anything about this primary school specifically but as a teacher who has taught in both prep and state primaries, your chances of getting your child into an independent secondary (particularly one that draws children from across London like Dulwich) are significantly higher from a prep school. In general, state primary schools wont be set up to help you with this process at all, in terms of references, interview prep, preparing them for entrance exams etc. A prep school will do all of this, if this is your main priority. Hope that helps!

Our child attend Halstow but we have since moved them to a different school. We were disappointed with the school, I didn't like how both reception classes shared the same space. It is too much to have 60 children and teachers in the one room. I feel the school has probably expanded too fast but is limited by the fact its an old building with no outdoor green space. Our child is thriving in another school but it took a while to undo the damage of the bad start they received here. This area has other schools with better facilities that if I was in the position I would consider. I think some people attend Halstow think it is more exclusive because of the small catchment and possibly close to a prep school education but we didn't find this. We ended up moving to a prep school. If anything the small catchment is stiffling to live in. At least 6-7 others had left before we withdrew our child.
