DS1 'strangled' in a game at school

Hi All, just want to get some opinions. My DS1 started P1 recently. It's a small school, so only about 5 other boy in his class. He mentioned this one boy not listening or not behaving previously, today the teacher called me aside and said there was an incident where a boy strangled my son in the playground in a game that got out of hand. The school dealt with it and my boy is fine.

After speaking to him - it's this boy in his class. I said he should perhaps just not play with him anymore and then my DS said there's not many others he can play with.

He loves school and can't wait to go everyday. I don't know if I'm over- or under-reacting. How would you feel if this happened? Is it normal for rough play in schools?

What could you do?

They’ve told you.
It’s concerning and something to keep an eye out for. If happens again, then is the time to ask for a meeting with school to calmly discuss your concerns and what measures that have in place to stop it happening again.

Or - ask for 5 mins with the teacher, thank her for telling you and say that you have been a little concerned about this boy and would like to know what measures in place to reduce chance of it happening again

I think what makes this difficult is that its such a small class and school. Its not like the kids can avoid each other really.

Perhaps just let the teacher know of your suspicions around the boys behaviour. Im not sure what else you could do.

FWIW I dont think you're over reacting at all.
