Is my 20 month old ready for potty training?

20 month DS has always been quite advanced with his communication and understanding of anything and everything (I swear I am not one of those mums 😆) and we had planned on potty training over Xmas holidays.

In preparation I bought a potty last time I was at ikea which he has recently discovers and regularly sits on shouting 'big boy poo'! Over the past couple of days I have become increasingly convinced he is actually pooing in his nappy when sitting on it.

How so I progress from here? I'm totally unprepared in terms of reading. Should I just take his nappy off next time he does it?

If he does poo, how do I teach him to pee? 🤣

We followed the Oh Crap book with my 23 month old and it worked well. After 2.5/3 weeks he was reliably taking himself to the potty and no accidents.
I'd go bare from the waist down and place him on potty every time he starts to wee (or poo). We stayed home for a couple of days to really crack it as you don't have long at the beginning to get them on the potty!

A second recommendation for oh crap. She recommends earlier potty training and it’s surprisingly quick and funny to read. Gives you a good system/structure for it all.

Also used oh crap 22 month old in pretty much day dry. Did take 6 weeks though.

Yes, it does take longer than the book suggests for many people (us included), but as long as you have a definite sense of progress that feels ok.
