We have had a potty knocking about for a while with no interest from DS
Tonight he announced it was his pot, sat on it and did a pee

I have not read any books on the subject
What am I supposed to do?
Do I need more than one potty? Are some better than others?

all advice gratefully received

Encourage poos straight into toilet if you can - poohs in potty are yuck yuck yuck...

How do you stop the child falling in?

Don't read books.

Have a potty on each floor. You can get really fancy ones but its better (IMHO) that they use the toilet ASAP so don't make them too comfortable on a potty.

Some say, take them every X minutes. That didn't work for dd. ONce she decided she wanted to I just have to gently remind her every so often or she asks. Give rewards - they soon forget to ask (the first day though dd ate through almost a whole box of terry's orange segments as they were the only chocs I hadn't eaten in the house as I'd won them on the preschool raffle.

DD spent 1.5 days using potty and then went straight to toilet. I think its the benefit of them being a little bit older.

Good luck !

They hold on to the sides - dd manages fine and I suspect she's smaller than your ds. Or, if they're not willing to do this get a seat for the toilet.

YOu can get inserts of various guises. Some are little potty shaped inserts that go under the wooden/plastic seat. You put them in and out every time

Some are foam padded seats that have a hinge and come down on top of the ladies seat.
