Anally retentive baby?! Advice needed please

Hi my baby is just over five weeks old and only poos once a day or every other day.
She seems to be in discomfort and only seems happy to go when her nappy is off.
She is breastfed apart from a formula feed(sma gold) last thing so I can get a bit of sleep.
I'm worried that this is not normal and I thought breatfed babies were supposed to go more often, has anyone got any advice?

I'm sure others will come along with more advice (although you might find the breastfeeding thread helpful also, there may already be a thread about it) but sounds perfectly normal to me going once a day, both mine did that as small babies and I know others as well. Why do you think she's in discomfort?

If your baby is happy and healthy and this is the only issue, maybe she would prefer to use a potty.

My DD disliked doing a poo in her nappy and would often wait until she was nappy free to wee/poo.

We started to hold her over a potty from being 10 weeks old and she was much happy for it. I know most babies are happy in soiled nappies but some babies are just more sensitive and show it.

I thought breastfed babies went less as there wasn't so much waste.

Hi, sorry it took so long to reply to you all, thanks for the advice.
She does seem in discomfort sometimes she scrunches herself up and goes very red.
At least I know that shes not the only one.
Think I will check out the breastfeeding thread as I'm having a few problems with that, also is there an I'm losing the plot thread?!
If not maybe I'll start one!!

Scrunching up and going red sounds normal again - it's an effort! DS2 did that when he was small and entirely breastfed. Try the born in whichever month thread in postnatal - really good for letting off steam as you're all in the same boat!

scrunching up their face and going very red is entirely normal. I think dd stopped doing that at about 4 months. Their bowels just aren't very well co-ordinated at first so it takes a lot of effort to get anything out iyswim. Also, I'm pretty sure that bf babies can go a week without pooing. As long as the poo is soft and pasty you're fine.

as for pooing with the nappy off, that is to cause maximum incovenience to you
