How to transition toddler to his own room??

Hey all, so I'm trying to get my nearly 2 year old to sleep in his own room and it's not going so well. He's not in an unfamiliar room, it's the room we all shared for months before me and my partner finally sorted out our actual bedroom and he always slept like a dream. Aside from waking up early he has always slept really well and goes down very easily. All his toys are in there, I've made it really nice for him and he has his night light, but this past week he has been waking up earlier and earlier in the morning crying and will not go back to sleep. I've tried getting in to bed with him, sitting by his bed or sitting outside his door and he's having none of it. What am I doing wrong? How can I make this transition easier for him? Me and my partner are very tired now lol and we're not down for these 4am starts! dead Thanks in advance.

I recorded myself reading some bedtime stories so if my dc woke up early, I’d play the recordings in their room, give them my dressing gown to cuddle and go back to my own bed. That did the trick for us.

I started leaving some books in reach, he has a little play / throws them about and takes himself back to sleep for an hour or so
