Toddler coughing - worried

I could hear my 18 month old toddler was coughing in his sleep a bit last night. When he got up this morning he was completely fine and hasn't coughed all morning. However, he's just gone down for his nap and I can hear him having the occasional cough again. This literally started last night, he's never done it before. Should I be concerned?

I'm worried because I've read it can be a sign of asthma?!

He's probably getting a cold. I don't think you need to fret about a couple of bouts of coughing. Hope he feels better soon.

Kids cough. Some kids cough a lot, others not so much.

He is more than likely getting a cold

Thanks - I just thought it was odd because it only happens when he's in his cot? I will keep an eye on him.

Usually because when they lie down the snot drains into the back of their throats and make them cough. Both my kids cough far more when laid down.

Thanks Tiger. He doesn't appear to have a snotty nose though - it's just the cough.

They cough far more lying down due to phlegm trickling into and draining into the throat. It's likely just the start of a mild cold. You're very lucky if you've got to 18 months without a single cough! I really wouldn't worry at all.
Hope they feel better soon.

My toddler is on week 3 of this! She wakes herself and me up numerous times a night coughing so much and was even sick the other night. Finally been given antibiotics to try shift it. She had no other cold symptoms either and barely coughs in the day, very strange

He coughed tonight literally 30 seconds after being put down! And is now having one or two coughs every five minutes or so. Is there much I can do or should I just wait and see what happens?

As mentioned, he’s absolutely fine and totally himself when up - active and happy and no signs of a cold or cough at all.

@Needingsupportplease sorry to hear your DD is suffering too! At what point did you call the doctor? I hope the antibiotics work their magic soon.

My son aged 3.5 suddenly started coughing alot with a cold and needed a blue inhaler as the cough didn't get better after a week, if anything it increased through the day and night, wasn't a productive cough. And now most colds he gets, he will need the inhaler... I think to help shift the phlegm.... I think if they get a persistant cough that lasts more than 6 days then it's time to see a Doctor.

She had hand foot and mouth or chicken pox (brilliant dr couldn't decide which one) 3 weeks ago and then the cough started it wasn't bothering her so I just left it but her eating decreased and it was really effecting her sleep so I decided enough was enough and rang the dr. Always best to get checked though I was worried about a chest infection if left untreated x
