Hi, My daughter started reception a couple of weeks ago, and since she started, her sleep has been disrupted - we put her to bed at 8, but she doesn't fall asleep till 9:30/10. This NEVER used to happen and i'm worried that she is anxious about school. I managed to get out of her that she is worried that she can't "do all the hard things at school". She is a pretty regular kid, and as far as i'm aware, the school is doing all the standard stuff - numbers, letters etc. What can i say or do to make her feel better. (I am not good at finding reassuring, empathetic things to say). Thank you very much

She sounds overtired maybe. Try to spend some time with her talking about her day as soon as she gets home....otherwise she's storing it all up for bedtime.

Ask open ended questions like "What was the best bit about today?" and "Was there a worst bit of today? Tell me about it"

This way she can't give yes or no answers but should open up a little bit.

Build up her confidence....practice reading and writing daily. Read to her...let her know she's doing well.

Oh and make sure she has a bath/shower nightly and maybe try some relaxing bedtime stories from you....if you don't already that is.
