Leg Slamming

Hello, My 5month old son for the past week in the middle of the night has started slamming his legs while asleep I watch him for a while to see if he settles, he doesnt so I get him out his crib and then he goes into a deeper sleep when he is in my arms, as soon as I put him back down he starts to do it again does anyone know why please x

Mine did this at that age, apparently it’s a self soothing technique. If he’s not awake/upset maybe leave him to it and see what he does? My DD grew out of it and moved on to hair and ear pulling

If he's asleep just leave him to it. DS used to thrash about in his sleep and then used to crawl in his sleep once he got a bit older. He went into his own room earlier than 6 months because I couldn't take it any more

Agree with others it’s a self soothing thing. Mine did it a lot when she was smaller :)

Aww thank you so much everyone aslong as its nothing serious, how did use find a way to sleep through it as he is so noisy it keeps me awake not in a selfish or horrible way 🙈😂 just keeps me up most the night x

Oh gosh, my 12 year old did this for years... I didn't even realise there was a name for it. He must have grown out of it. Either that or I'm so used to it, it doesn't wake me up anymore 😒

Mine did it shortly before he started getting really mobile. It was like he was preparing for being on the move.

Could you lie him on his tummy to sleep? If he's rolling anyway, it's OK to sleep in all positions.

Tbh hes not rolling much yet, he just lifts his legs in the air and slams them down constantly I thought could it of been his mattress as its so firm I've tried all sorts to get him comfy but if that's his way of soothing then so be it :) just so noisy trying to get to sleep while he's slamming his legs x

My DD used to do this. Then she would fart and would go back to sleep. I thought it was a windy bottom thing.

Aww bless! I was watching him last night for ages and he wouldn't stop at all then he scratches his cot with his hands hes so noisy hes keeping me awake when he's asleep 🙈😂x

I'm 30 and still Slam my legs off the mattress, it sort of bounces/rocks me so I settle better.

its amazing how things can settle you isnt it x

Hello! My daughter who’s 5 months does this too! Honestly nothing to worry about. In my LO case I think it’s that she’s ‘found her legs’ 😂 she does it to fall asleep, on her play mat even when I’m changing her!! I had a panic the first time she did it the noise was so loud I thought the cot had broken 😂

NewMam02 how do you manage to sleep through the noise? my son doesn't seem to do it during the day just in the middle of the night its strange x

Unfortunately it wakes me up every time 😂 I usually give her a dummy if she’s really slamming her legs as that helps her to get back into a deeper sleep. She usually spits it out 10 minutes after but she’s in a deeper sleep by then so doesn’t wake up 🙂

My DD also did this, didn't realise it was actually a thing!

@leonaaaa we used to put a folded up blanket under where the bottom of her legs were - not massively raised but just enough to soften the blow when she brought them back down it did seem to muffle the noise a little.

Most babies do that, it's quite normal.

yeah same here NewMam02 🙈😂 I do give him his dummy aswell but then in like an hour or so he will do it again, @CountingDownToML my husband actually said about putting a blanket under his legs but I was abit scared to incase he kicked it some how and it got to his face Thank you all ever so much with this advice use have been amazing help its all a learning curve being a new mummy 😇x

Yep my LO does this and still does from time to time. Best invention - ear plugs. I still wake when she does it even with ear phones/plugs, but I can drift back off. If my LO needs me I will easily hear her through my headphones 😂

Yep my LO scratches cot too, it's like some sound out of a horror movie 😂

I didn't put anything under her, like you I have nothing loose and she even sleeps in sleeping bag as I'm too worried with blankets. Only time blankets if it's its over 25 degrees x

im the exact same with blankets i worry so much but them sleep sacks are brilliant! howling yes them scratches do sound out of a horror film 😂😂😂
