Ammonia smell in nappies - yuk!

Have been very happily using washables (bumbles) for 1 year now but recenly moved rented house and using a different (not new) washing machine which may or may not be relevant.
Am finding that suds flow out of the machine mid cycle all over the floor even though I only use half the advised amount of detergent and I need an extra rinse to get rid of the suds.
The nappies smell ok when clean and dry but when only slightly wet (as in wee'd on wet!) have a very pungent ammonia smell which is horrible.
Any tips? I'd be grateful.

Your machine may not be rinsing properly. This has happened to me and I used to have to be very non eco friendly and wash the nappies on a very hot wash. Hanging them in the garden when it is very sunny can also help (not at this time of year though) and drying throughly with a tumble dryer too. Some epople add vinegar or tee tree oil to the wash which can also help.

Ask your landlord for a new machine too!

Weird - sounds like you need a new machine if it is leaking suds onto your floor - does it so that with non-nappy washes too? I take it you haven't changed your washing powder recently?

Do you think your LO is possibly having stronger wees at the moment (and causing the ammonia smell?). I had a strong ammonia smell in DDs nappies earlier this year but they still smelt when I had washed them and they were clean and dry (got over that one by doing a COLD rinse before washing with detergent).

sweet vinegar in the rinse cycle and extra rinses. Does sound like you need to ask for a new machine or that one serviced.
