DS 4 has just started reception and says that none of the other children play with him at lunchtime in the playground.
Obviously I can imagine that's not entirely true but I think he's struggling to 'join in' how can I get him to join in with the other children?
Any tips or things I can tell him?
Thank you

Bless him, it’s hard the first few weeks. I’d encourage him to practice asking ‘can I play?’ At four they don’t think of asking someone who looks lonely to join in, but if he goes up to a group of kids playing football or something and asks to join in they’ll let him.

Also encourage him to tell the lunchtime supervisors/grown ups he has nobody to play with. When they’re really small there are usually supervisors who will support them at break times and help them find a friend to play with.

I wouldn’t worry about it if I’m honest. Kids that age don’t ask to play with one another, they just do, mainly just running around with no actual game or aim.

When he says he don’t play, he might mean literally but still maybe actually doing something with others…..like running.

Or he may just be happy to be sitting and watching others play, as long as his happy what does it matter? It won’t always be like this so don’t worry.
