Hypospadias

Hi I am wondering if any other parents have experience of hypospadias in their baby boys. My son is 6 months old and is being seen by a consultant for a severe hypospadias which also consists of a partially developed foreskin and slight bend in his penis. We’ve been advised that it will be a minimum of two corrective surgeries but more likely 3 to repair. My baby has already been through so much as he was born very premature and has had a number of health concerns to overcome. We’ve had so much to worry about that we’d put it to the back of our minds but now he’s on the waiting list for surgery I can’t help but feel anxious about possible complications, surgery outcomes (will his willy look very different?) and any psychological impact it may have on him when he’s older. Google has thrown up all manner of horror stories and so I’m hoping there might be some parents who have gone through this themselves who might be able to share their experience for their little ones who have had surgery. Smile

Hi there! My son has his stage 1 hypospadias repair earlier this year, just after his second birthday. Had a check up appointment yesterday. I can hopefully answer some questions you may have?

My son had a hyposadia repair at 18 months. No issue at all and now at nearly 12 I don’t think he even remembers it!

Hello! Thank you so much for your message! Oh bless, how did your son get on at his check up? I guess I’m a bit worried about the surgery itself and recovery after although the consultant has gave a brief bit of info last week which helped understand how we help him recover at home. How was your little one in the hours / days after? I’m also keen to have a better idea how well it all heals and what degree of scarring there will be - I made the mistake of Googling it and obviously there are extreme examples of complications causing lots of scarring which has made me so worried.

Thank you! It’s so reassuring to hear from others who have experience with their little ones and your message has reassured so much. I think often it’s allot of worst case examples online so it’s a relief to hear your experience and I’m thrilled your son has had no issues since! Smile

@daydream83 his check up was great, it has healed really well. They will see him in a years time and do a urine flow test and if that is all okay they will discharge him completely.

He had a one stage repair, so DS the hole was in the wrong place and he excess skin. They fully circumcised him and corrected the hole. We were home the same day and for the first 48 hours he was okay, aside from the bulky dressing and bloody hell it is bulky!
They showed me how to cut the nappies, as you have to double nappy until the dressing comes off.
He would get upset when he had a wee at first, despite the anti bladder spasm medication. And we had to get four lots of medicine down him, which was not fun.

I wont lie @daydream83 it was a rough few days until the dressings came off but now, there are no scars and he won’t remember it at all in a few years.

You say its a three stage operation, did they say why or how long inbetween the operations?

I hope it all goes well for your little boy, I am sure it will x

Hi OP, no experience yet but just to say you're not alone, my baby was born 3 weeks ago and he has this as well. We have been given very little info only that they will look at it when he's 1. It was a bit nerve wracking at first as it took him a couple of days to have his first wee.

Then older brother had his 3 year check up yesterday and they've said he has a small penis as well! So I don't know how I'm building them :o
