Hi mums I’m hoping someone can help me, we have to buy a new car seat for my 2,5 year old. He is very tall for his age 101cm and weights 15,7kg. We are looking to get the maxi-cosy kore pro or the brutal romer kids fix - both car seats are group stage 2/3 and say there are for kids 100cm and above, 15+kg. So seems there are fine for our son! But the age they give is 3,5 years! Our son is only 2,5. I know age is not important and measurements are way more important but still, is he still too little do you think?

No, these car seats only use the adult seatbelt - they don't have a five point harness, so he would be much too little for them really. That's why they recommend a minimum age of 3.5 years. The reason he reaches the minimum stats is because he's tall for his age.

I would look at something like Joie Bold that has the harness up to 25kg. You can then swap to the booster mode with seatbelt when he is about 4/5 years old. The only thing is you have to fit it with top tether, seatbelt and isofix so you'll need all 3 attachments in your car. Top Tether is rare in cars over 10 years old.

Or if you want you could look at rear facing options like Britax Max Way. That is safer for him and you don't need top tether. Again it's up to 25kg which means it will have the required space for him height wise. You'll probably be able to use it until he is around 6 or 7.

If you don't want to rear face and don't have top tether, then Britax Evolva might be worth a look as the harness is up to 18kg but the height on it is higher than some other seats. I'd try before you buy to see how much room you have to extend the headrest. If that is too short, Joie Elevate would probably work as the height is really high in that one. It's just not as protective as a seat.

Alternatively depending on what seat you have now it might just need some adjustment to fit him a bit better? Car seats for Group 1 are generally designed for up to about 105/110cm so it would be unusual for him to be too big unless it hasn't been adjusted as he's grown.

Thanks a lot, great recommendations, I’ll take a look. He is very tall and he looks about 4:) his current seat is “birth to 18kg” but we have a new baby coming in 4 weeks and we want to give it to new baby. So we need a new seat for toddler. Unfortunately nowhere in Dublin actually stocks any decent seat, your only option is to order online so u can’t really check and fit the child etc. So bad I know…
I read so many reviews and they all says that once a child reaches 100cm and 15kg he can go to group 2/3 car seat. And yes it doesn’t have the 5 point harness, just normal seatbelts like you said that’s why I’m a little hesitant. I want to buy something now that will last until 12 years old, instead of buying something that will last until 18 kg and then in a year time having to buy another seat… I’m going to look at all the seats you mentions though- thanks a lot

Ah I see what you mean. Have you looked at Tony Kealys? They have a branch in Dublin and some really good options.

Legally he can go in a high backed booster seat but I really wouldn't recommend it. Maybe in an emergency but not as his proper seat.

2.5y is too young to use an adult seatbelt even for a tall child.

We had a similar problem and I used a Cosy n Safe Excalibur which had a harness to 25kg. We are now expecting a new baby and have bought the Britax Romer kidfix isize, it was close between that or the kore pro as they are both slim seats. The middle sibling has moved into the Excalibur.

My DS is 5.5years and it's only now I feel happy with him using the adult seatbelt! The middle one is 3.5y and also quite tall, but basically until recently it had a 5 year old in it in a 5 point harness.

Thanks Ladies! I actually decided now to go with the 1/2/3 group as you recommended. Back to square one then, I’m looking at the britax advancafix M isize at the moment but I will check out all the seats you mentioned.

@BertieBotts thanks I forgot about tony kealys! I’ll go there tomorrow. Now that mother care is gone there is no decent shop at all. Bella Baby and Boots sells the good seats but sure they hold no stock in the stores which is bad

I really like the advansafix, it's what we have for DS2. I would definitely recommend checking in store though to see how much space you've got to raise the headrest in it. You might also want the advansafix IV instead of the i-size because the i-size technically you're supposed to stop using the five point harness at 102cm.
