Does this sound like tongue tie?

Baby born 5 weeks ago tomorrow on 25th centile and stuck To that centile beautifully. Only lost 3% of body weight at 5 day check and had bounced back above birth weight by 10 day check.

However, always struggled with latch. Seem to get a better latch at bf clinics but it still pinches no matter how good it looks from the outside. Had cracked, bleeding nipples since the beginning which never fully heal as reopen at next feed. I am now using breast shields but feel like baby can’t get as much out with them on (have ordered another pair in slightly bigger size to see if that helps).

Having looked at tongue tie symptoms online she has the following
-fussy at breast
-coughs on breast
-reflux
-slips off latch repeatedly
-falls asleep before finishing a feed.

I am also suffering with vasospasm, I imagine as a result of her poor latch. Even with the shields I just feel a constant pinching. Have had a bout of mastitis few weeks ago and lots of blocked ducts since.

The only thing that makes me think not tongue tie is that she has put on weight brilliantly. Am going to book an assessment either way on Monday but wondered what other people’s experiences were.

As your doing I would get someone to look at LO. If it is. Within couple weeks be cut, and most people report a difference within 24hrs. Have a google of tongue tie pictures x

You'll need to get it checked, but be warned...midwives, hvs and doctors all missed my seconds tongue tie even though I asked if he had it. Saying that all the things you list can just be issues with establishing b feeding too. Do you have b feeding peer supporters? I found that they're the best in identifying tongue tie.

Both my children had tongue tie. The first had major issues with poor feeding and weight gain which is how it led to her getting diagnosed but the second never had any issues with weight gain, he didn’t lose any of his birth weight and piled on the pounds, however the latch was really painful and my nipple was coming out white and lipstick shaped. So I would say it can definitely be a possibility to have it but not have weight gain issues.

One thing to point out is with my second, multiple midwives had a look and said they couldn’t see a tongue tie however I knew it didn’t feel right and it was only when I took him to see a tongue tie specialist that it was spotted. So push for a referral to the specialist at your hospital if they have one or if it’s at all affordable you could consider going private (costs £150-£200 I think). Good luck!
