Posted yesterday about weird nct car seat advice also asked about 4x4s but didn’t get any replies on the car type.

Need a new car will be doing lease hire, will have 2 chunky isofix bases in car and would still like the use of the middle seat and decent boot space. We live in the suburbs of a city so still needs to be practical for that too.

Dh thinks a 4x4 is best, he’s thinking of a seat Ateca or formento (sp?). Anyone got an ateca, how you rate it from space? Or any other 4x4 recommends? Reluctant to go to lots of dealerships as I’m 7 months preggo x

We have an XC90 and for a few years ran it with two huge car seats and a teenager in the middle, or for comfort on a long journey he'd sit in the pop up seats in the back. We're now at the point where the middle child is in a HBB so there's more room.

I don't find it tricky to park, even in London, but I am confident at parallel parking.

Skoda Kodiaq

We have a seat tarraco, looks like the Ateca but bigger , my 12 year old can just about sit between the 2 car seats which are the same as yours , but a adult man would not. It is 7 seater but because it's 4x4 style rather than people carrier they are pretty uncomfortable in terms of leg room and because of the 2 car seats you can't access through the back passenger doors only the boot so we just leave them flat and make use of the big boot.

The boot on the Ateca is a decent size, I think it’s as good as any similar sized car - clearly not going to rival some of the bigger cars mentioned here that are true beasts! It’s not as wide as you would think - is very similar width and length to a lot of standard saloon type cars it’s just taller really (and I loved the shape and the what car rating sold it). I now have a Tarraco but that seems quite boxy in comparison…

Oh and just to add, it's hard to beat the boot space of the Skoda superb. We can fit in out monster double buggy, a single buggy, some suitcases and a load of shopping without breaking a sweat. You can't do that in most SUVs!
Not all SUVs have smaller boots.

A RR sport (5 seater) has 784 litres. A Skoda superb has 625.

We've got a Mitsubishi Outlander. It's an ugly thing but it's got 7 seats and we've got three kids in car seats so it works for us! The very back seats fold down so it's got a huge boot if you don't need them, but the extra seats are there when you do. I can fit between two car seats in the middle row but Im quite slim.

It's a good car, automatic and 4 wheel drive. It's leased as well.

If we didn't have three kids we would have got an estate car though, my recent favourite we had was a Hyundai i40 estate, it was a lovely car. We got two car seats in that no bother and they we the massive joie spin ones.

I've a Q5 and it is just under £470pm on a 4 year lease with no advance rental. It's a brilliant car (though kids way to old for car seats so no opinion on that.

labradorsandgin · 02/09/2021 19:35

@Milkbottlelegs ours has 660, which I think is pretty good going. But yes, not claiming that it's bigger than the boots of all SUVs (and certainly comes without the ludicrous price tag of a RR) But it's bigger than most, and comes without having to truck an enormous SUV beast around.

@labradorsandgin

Why is your DH so insistent on a 4x4, especially in the city?

We looked into this extensively and briefly considered 4x4s but in reality their boot space is normally a bit crap in comparison to most estate cars, and they're just so, so bad for the environment.

We went for a Skoda superb estate and it's amazing. Cannot fault it. We have two huge erf seats in the back and I can just about squeeze in between them (but it's not comfy)! This would be the same in any of the four by fours you look at (I spent a long time researching this), other than the humongous ones like the Volvo xc90 which would be an absolute nightmare to park in at the shops etc.

Skoda parts are all the same as BMW parts etc but they cost less because for whatever reason the brand is perceived as less fancy, but if you look up the reviews for the Skoda superb you'll see they speak for themselves.

Oh he’s not insisting on a 4x4. He loves seats and has fancied an ateca for a while and thought it might work as they look spacious.

I mentioned the estates to him and said they’re a bit more spacious than the 4x4s.

Thanks for the suggestion!

They look lovely too! I’m an Audi/ merc/ bmw lover through and through so I’d love one but we’ve mentally set a budget and we’re looking around £300 with an upfront of £1500 so that’s a bit out the price range xx

I think you mean Audi, not BMW, as they are both part of the same group.
