8 month old not reaching out to be picked up

What age do babies tend to do this? Websites say 6 months but he's not doing it yet. He does get very excited when I approach him to pick him up, waving his arms and kicking his legs. He also reaches for toys.

Just worried he should be doing this! I can't remember now when my first DS did it.

I was just reading about this today, funnily enough!

It says that babies are usually lifting their arms as a request to be picked up by 12 months. Before that, by 6 or 7 months, it is possible they might do this as a response to seeing you reaching out for them. Don't worry! My baby is 8 months too and he only lifts his arms extremely subtly. Almost like a subconscious tiny movement if I hold out my arms to him. I wouldn't notice if I wasn't looking and scrutinising. Almost like a twitch really! He does get excited too, like yours. And leans towards me. But isn't lifting his arms as a request yet. Keep encouraging your baby by holding out your arms. I do it too, to encourage my baby to try to crawl towards me. He's almost there but can't do it quick enough so gets frustrated! You'll probably notice your baby start to do it more obviously in the next few months! 9 months seems to be the magic age for starting to do things more obviously and intentionally, like clapping, waving, pointing. It's all quite similar in my opinion. Intentionally making arm and hand gestures.

I can't really remember the exact time line but ds said 'up' to be picked up before he started lifting his arms of his own volition! I wouldn't worry!

My DD is a year old and never did this until last week when she wanted me to catch her as she hurled herself off the sofa arm! She never reaches to be picked up if she's sad.

My DD is nearly 8 months and doesn’t life her arms to me. She does raise her head and neck off the floor to sort of help me pick her up - if that makes sense!

@BingoBluey How is your baby now any updates??

CoalCraft · 15/06/2023 11:30

Yeah, mine started lifting her arms as I was about to pick her up anyway at about 6 months, but she's now 10 months and has only just maybe started to request being picked up.
