We're lucky enough to be on holiday. It’s such a beautiful place by the sea and amazing pool with loads of entertainment for the kids. Big restaurant with lovely local food on offer.

So far my one year old has played with rocks, and eaten baked beans.

It's the same as their first Christmas isn't it? We buy them an amazing teddy bear or whatever - they just want to play with the wrapping paper.

My parents took me to Hawaii when I was 11/12. It was amazing, we went to coral reefs, hired an open top muscle car and traveled the island, saw the turtles and surfers, ate traditional cuisine, went to Pearl harbour.

I know all this because they tell me about it regularly. The only thing I remember is that the hotel didn’t have a 13th floor.

Kids are knobs.

I was at a National Trust property the other week. Loads of families. Lots for children to do besides just visiting the house and grounds- play area with zip wires etc, interactive art installations, croquet, quoits, badminton, a maze and a quiz.
What appeared to be most popular was the drained fountain where loads of children up to the age of 8 or 9 were scooping and piling up the gravel.
There is something about gravel...

At that age my dc would have wanted to tour the local art galleries and become fluent in the local language.

Confused

Oh, and my best memories of our first family holiday ( I was probably 6) are of playing in the holiday apartment understairs cupboard.

I travelled from Essex to the far side of London to take my toddler to a lovely children's concert and story telling session in a beautiful old building. She lasted 5 minutes then went and played with the gravel under the trees in the grounds. I took her to Wahaca and gave her a bowl of cheese to eat while I had a burrito and a cocktail so the day wasn't a total bust.

I know she would be just as entertained with rocks and beans at home and won't remember any of this.

Paid a small fortune to take DS to the aquarium when he was 1. Slept through it. I enjoyed it though.

Any trip to a NT/EH garden is now accompanied by the constant whinge of "where's the playground mummy"

Sounds like a good number of adult Brits abroad!

toomuchlaundry · 29/08/2021 12:01

Went to Longleat safari park, DS talked about the cars we saw as we were driving through, hardly batted an eyelid at the animals. Could have saved our money and just sat in the traffic jam on the A303!

Hoppinggreen · 29/08/2021 12:05

We own a property abroad and so the kids don’t always see going as a holiday after all these years.
When DS was about 6 I asked him what he was most looking forwards to on an upcoming visit and he said not wearing underpants

Hellocatshome · 29/08/2021 12:10

Took my kids to New York when the youngest was 8. The bit he remembers the most was that the Pizza was huge and he didn't need a ticket for the subway.

monogoo · 29/08/2021 12:12

Took dc on UK holiday recently, had amazing food, theme park, saw dolphins on boat trip, etc. best thing according was eating Mcdonald's on the way apparently 🤦‍♀️

MyFloorIsLava · 29/08/2021 12:20

I took the DC out to the beach, bought body boards, went for ice creams, built sand castles, played football on the beach etc etc. DS's favourite part was the bloody turnstiles in the public toilet.

At a charming UK coastal town, complete with local festival. My 17-year-old has slept till noon and declared she doesn't like seafood.

TheNarwhalBalloon · 29/08/2021 12:37

I love this thread. I took DS1 to a lovely animal park for his 2nd birthday. Lots of chickens, goats etc, wandering around and other larger animals in pens. He crouched on a gravel path (there really is something about gravel!) playing with the stones for 90% of the time we were there.

toomuchlaundry · 29/08/2021 12:43

Hotel breakfasts were also the highlight of any holiday

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/08/2021 12:46

I give you… the pigeons in the Legoland car park. Thank fuck we used vouchers.

BlowDryRat · 29/08/2021 12:47

We took our 2 to China a few years ago. DD likes to tell people about the American man who pushed her into the pond at the Yu Yuan gardens on our first day in Shanghai. She also remembers having rice cooked in a bamboo stick, but that's about it.

Also DD, aged 7 at the time. She was due to be a bridesmaid the next day, wildly excited. I asked why she was so excited, expecting her to say because she was going to get her hair done, wear a pretty dress, walk down the aisle or something similar. No. She bounced up and down and shouted, 'I get to eat CAKE!' She is not deprived of desserts Hmm

Hellocatshome · 29/08/2021 12:56

@BlowDryRat I need to know why the American man pushed her in the pond!

ladygracie · 29/08/2021 13:00

@Hellocatshome @BlowDryRat I was just coming on to ask the same question! 😂
