We're lucky enough to be on holiday. It’s such a beautiful place by the sea and amazing pool with loads of entertainment for the kids. Big restaurant with lovely local food on offer.

So far my one year old has played with rocks, and eaten baked beans.

I planned a day with train and museum mad DS1 away from his baby twin brothers. Train to York, train museum, ride on Thomas, various other museums, topped off by a visit to a “grown up” restaurant. (It was a poshish American style place)
What did he tell daddy, nursery and grandma about? “Mummy had loads of cocktails and I did too!” They were mocktails.

Went to NYC and Cape Cod a couple of years ago. Fabulous galleries in the city, saw all the iconic sights, beautiful beaches on the Cape. DC2 told everyone she loved it because "the holiday cottage had cable TV so I could watch The Disney Channel every day".

I also remember when my nephew came to stay with us, as he was chosen from a pool of thousands for an amazing work experience programme with a premier league football team. When his mum asked him what his favourite bit was he said "aunty T buys proper butter".

NC for this as I have never confessed this to anyone. An early memory from the 60s was being on holiday in Looe. It rained a lot and in those days in B&Bs you got kicked out after breakfast and we're allowed back in before dinner. Trying to find stuff to do and we walked past the local theatre. It was advertising the show for that night, strippers! Confused I contemplated this and came to the conclusion I wanted to be a stripper when I grew up. And not in a 'I want to be an astronaut' pie in the sky, but seriously. I had the sense not to voice this out loud though. I was 9. Blush

Paid £50 to go to go to some fancy gardens with adventure playground the other week...asked 5 year old DS what he liked best about the day "playing with the marble run at home afterwards" 🙄

Hoppinggreen · 29/08/2021 18:48

Entering Knowsley safari park with 3 year old DD, having paid a bloody fortune. Listing all the amazing things she was going to see and was suddenly stopped by DD going wide eyed and saying
“Oh wow, look mummy - it’s a BUS!!”

Hungry675tf · 29/08/2021 19:10

Took kids to the zoo and one of them got extremely over excited about seeing a squirrel 🙄

NoYOUbekind · 29/08/2021 19:21

On honeymoon, years ago, we kept seeing these twin teens who were just so bloody bored with the whole trip. So much so that we called them the Sulky Twins and still talk about them today. But our children would never be like that, we declared.

Fast forward 15 years and I nearly sent DS home on the bus last holiday. Kids are dicks.

This thread is brilliant. I was laughing all the way through it!

Took my son to the zoo age 3. Saw one of those shit coin operated ride on things at the entrance. Spoke about it the whole way round and pretty much ignored the animals. Hmm

UnsolicitedDickPic · 29/08/2021 19:34

@Larryyourwaiter

DD went to a zoo with school, when I asked what animals she had seen, only one answer ‘a wasp’.
I absolutely love this.
LoveFall · 29/08/2021 19:38

This was me. Lived in small town B.C. Drove a good 12 hours to Vancouver to visit our grandparents, usually at Easter.

My fondest memory is stopping at the McDonalds on the way between the grandparents' places. We didn't have one at home as they were new but there was one (only one) in Vancouver.

My Dad would buy a huge bag of the burgers for the six of us. I think they were 20 cents or something.

It was awesome!

UnsolicitedDickPic · 29/08/2021 19:38

This is reassuring because I've been worrying that I won't be able to afford for DD to have all these amazing experiences when actually, she wouldn't bloody remember them even if I could.

From the sounds of this thread take her on a bus to a park with ducks, squirrels and gravel and she will have the time of her life Grin

Magpiecomplex · 29/08/2021 19:49

I'm fairly sure my 16 year old would claim that the best bit of our holiday this summer was the sausage and bacon sandwich in a random cafe we stopped at for lunch one day. Apparently it was very nice.

SpottyStripyDuvet · 29/08/2021 19:49

We are currently away on holiday and glamping for the first time. As we pulled up at the site DS aged 5 declared "this is the most rubbish holiday ever". He has warmed to it, mostly due to the marshmallows toasted over the firepit.

alphabetspagetti · 29/08/2021 19:50

We went to Flamingoland recently. It was a fairly dire day out as so many rides were shut and so we spent a lot of time looking at the animals. The only thing the DC mention to anyone is that there weren't any flamingos at Flamingoland or at least not ones that we saw they may have been elsewhere in the park

Hellocatshome · 29/08/2021 19:54

@alphabetspagetti haha whereas on the other hand we went to a bird place (nowhere near Flamingoland) when DS was about 3 and while looking at the Flamingos I said "Where do you think Flamingos come from DS?" Without missing a beat and with much seriousness he said "Flamingoland" and I couldn't stop laughing for the rest of the day.

dontstealmymagnolias · 29/08/2021 19:59

Ds has ASD and had an intense interest in a particular animal. The only place in Europe that had it was a theme park in Ireland (Tayto). I paid a fortune for the hotel package, entrance fees and car hire. It's also home to the largest wooden roller-coaster in the world. The dc were most excited by the free packet of crisps on the way out Hmm

Sosomego · 29/08/2021 20:02

A few years ago we took our kids to visit my brother in Canada at Christmas. We did loads of special Christmas themed activities, brilliant days out and spent a small fortune on a New Year's eve party at the top of a mountain. What do they remember? The house we were staying in had a shower curtain with a Jaws style shark on it.

PintOfBovril · 29/08/2021 20:05

This thread is what I needed. Just returned from a short caravan break with our nearly 2yo. Asked him what he liked best about the holiday... Was it the boat ride, the picnic by the river, having an ice cream by a castle?

It was the carpark gate at the entrance to the caravan park.

peaches35 · 29/08/2021 20:06

This thread actually makes me feel loads better. Because even if (like me) you can’t afford expensive holidays or experiences for your kids, it just goes to show that they’re not missing out!

Peanutsandchilli · 29/08/2021 20:08

My child would have eaten rocks and played with beans, so I guess you're doing ok so far.

HumbugWhale · 29/08/2021 20:12

I love this thread! After an exciting day out ds often says his favourite thing was lunch!
