Newborn head big?

Today the health visitor measured my baby girls head twice saying 'oh that's a bit big but don't worry'... I am obviously now worried. She is 2 weeks old and the measurement says 37cm... she is not a small baby. She weighed 8.5 pounds and is average length.
Anyone had any head size experience? X

Newborn head big?

DS’s head was massive and health visitor completely freaked out. We saw a consultant who looked at DH, saw how big his head is and rolled his eyes. If you or partner have a big head, I wouldn’t worry.

Congrats!
Her head looks perfect to me!
My DS head was measuring big too but nothing ever come of it and I didn't even notice anything!
And if anything, now at 2 he looks well in proposition to the rest of his body!

If it’s above a certain centile, they refer you for a scan & consultant follow up I think.
If she hasn’t done that, then I wouldn’t think you need to worry.
Congratulations on your lovely baby 🙂

Did she mention what centile your baby's head is on? The reason I ask is my son was on the 93rd centile for his head but low for everything else.
They weren't worried and now he's 8 and id say he does still have abit of a big head but you can't tell, he looks in proportion just when I buy hats he has next size up.
I always joke that it's cos of his big brain.
I think your baby's head looks fine and if the health visitor isn't concerned I wouldn't be.

picklemewalnuts · 27/08/2021 17:11

My son's head was off the charts, having been normal at birth. They measured him weekly or something, just in case, while reassuring us that it's almost certainly fine. Again, said it most likely runs in the family.

My boy's head was truly massive. I mean, noticeably so. Like a bowling ball. And he was 10lb+ born.

He's an adorable, petite young man now. 🤷🏼‍♀️

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 27/08/2021 17:11

Both of mine had big heads! My youngest was referred to a consultant for review on around their first birthday as was classed as out of proportion due to it being so high on the centile compared to the rest of them, but the consultant had no concerns with re development then looked at DH and commented it clearly runs in family before discharging us 😂

ProfessionalTeaDrinker · 27/08/2021 17:12

And she looks beautiful btw, congratulations Smile

ApolloandDaphne · 27/08/2021 17:13

I have baby experience not head size experience and I say she is perfect and absolutely beautiful!

saltedcaramelanything · 27/08/2021 17:16

I'm not even joking when I say the FIRST THING the midwife said after my son was born "wow he's got a big head huh!"

99th centile
9.2 weight

Never followed up or anything like that.

2.5yrs now and he's still got a big head, but looks proportional to me. Just bigger than the other kids his age.

Justme10 · 27/08/2021 17:23

My oldest had a big head it was in the 90s centile and bigger than the rest of him, you could tell from the scan he was going to have a big head Grinbut he is perfectly fine and in proportion now.

Did you have a section? Only reason I ask is the health visitor told me that during a vaginal birth the babies head can squash a bit on the way out but that obviously doesn't happen with a section. That was her reason for my boy being big headed, I don't know how true that it.

But she is beautiful, congratulations Thanks

RavenclawsRoar · 27/08/2021 17:44

Ds2 has a massive head. I think it's 98th centile and has been since birth. Never been any issue. I have a huge head too - can never find hats that fit!

Yummymummy2020 · 27/08/2021 17:47

My nephew had a huge head, way bigger than your little ones. He was totally fine though, In college now and flying along. He never got a referral at all, probably should have by other peoples experience but he did grow into it(though it is still a bit big now that we are talking about head sizes) I understand the worry but I would try not to as she looks beautiful and not big headed to me!

DS had an average head at birth, but with loads of ridges. By his six week check they'd smoothed out and his head was massive. I actually heard crunching as he made his way through my pelvis. Mine I think, rather than his!
BastardMonkfish · 27/08/2021 18:39

My DD has a disproportionately large head going by centiles but think it's just really round because she never engaged and I had a section. Honestly this is one of those things that's not worth worrying about.

Thank you everyone! I can't say how much you have made me feel better. Sending so much love to you all xxx
