Newborn jerky sleep movements - normal?

SundayTwizzle · 26/08/2021 12:54

DD is 11 days old and I'm a first timer so fretting over everything!

When she's asleep she makes these sudden jerky moments, almost like spasms. Her eyes twitch a lot too and occasionally she lifts her head or will pull a funny expression.

Is this normal or should I mention it to the health visitor?

Thanks!

Normal Smile enjoy your new baby!

Absolutely normal. You could swaddle to stop the reflexes waking her up as much and some babies really like feeling secure like they were in the womb

Normal. Babies are weird little things Grin

Yup. Have a read up on the startle reflex. I found it super annoying because it used to wake my son up but it does go away

I vaguely remember this and feeling as you do. Don't get me started on the horrific noises she could sometimes make while sleeping. Again, all normal as it turns out. Its also normal to worry though :)

Yes, it's the moro reflex

SundayTwizzle · 26/08/2021 17:38

Thank you this has settled my mind a lot. The noises freaked me out at first too but it's quite comforting being able to hear her!

My first DD had a very strong startle reflex and would often wake herself up with the sudden movements, it will go over time.
We also nicknamed her snuffle pig with all the little grunts and noises she made.

My lo was the same, she's always been a wiggly baby, I tried swaddling, the first night was fine but then she decided she didn't like it! I used to pop my hand on her in the night to try and keep her still until she fell asleep 😁
Shes 8 months old now and still wiggly!

Newborns are really quite odd and very noisy! It’s all normal. Congratulations
