When did your babys newborn rash/baby acne clear up?

Third baby but never had baby acne before. If your baby had it, when did it clear up?

DD is 5 weeks old and since about 2 weeks has had severe baby acne. Her face, neck, scalp and top of her chest is covered. If you Google baby acne and find the most severe pictures, then that is her.

I feel fairly confident its baby acne and not CMPA because she feeds really well (BF) and although she does get gassy and quite sicky, there is very little crying or fussing ever. Only time she ever really cries is if she's hungry.

She also sleeps really well during the day. At night, when on her back she does squirm and grunt quite a lot but generally sleeps through it. She has also started the occasional 5 hour stretch at night.

She seems to be a content baby. Everything I've read about babies with CMPA suggests they are not content.

Lastly, the rash stops dead part way down her chest, not a single spot anywhere else on her body. Surely if it was an allergy it would be more widespread?

Anyway, HV has suggested that I reduce dairy intake, just in case, but not eliminate it since that has issues of its own. She has also suggested I use baby Aveeno and if that fails ask the doctor for ointment at 6 week cream.

However, since I've also read baby acne clears up on its own, AIBU to leave it a bit longer to see if it does?

I don't want her to be uncomfortable but equally don't want to start putting stuff on her skin or messing about with my diet for the sake of it?

I doused DD in breast milk a few times and it cleared up in about 2-4 days. Once healed it didn't come back.

Hi, it took a few weeks.

Use cooled boiled to clean their face once in the morning and once in the evening, that helped clear up my daughters acne.

WhiteHorse92 · 20/08/2021 19:23

My baby had it on his face and upper chest from about 2-3 weeks old and it lasted a few weeks and just went on its own. I did apply some breast milk and Aveeno baby moisturiser over it as well. I'd definitely give the moisturiser a go if you haven't already, I used it for dry skin on his forehead and that went after a few days.

A couple of weeks!

About 6/7 weeks. HV said my dd was one of the 'most severe' cases she had seen. She looked awful but it didn't bother her. Just bothered me as looked so bad. Decided not to start using products and just left it and then within about a week it had all gone.

Razpoot · 20/08/2021 20:13

A few weeks like others have said :)

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 20/08/2021 20:52

I think it came on when he was a few weeks old and went around 11 weeks

gemloving · 20/08/2021 21:01

My second baby had it BAD, he's 3 months now and his skin is beautiful.

The doctor did prescribe a steroid cream which I used twice.

gemloving · 20/08/2021 21:03

I would however ask the GP just in case as my friends baby had a yeast infection on his skin and needed a special cream for that x

Fleetw00d · 21/08/2021 21:59

About 8 weeks to clear. I used to put breastmilk on it when it was really bad!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/08/2021 22:05

A few weeks. DD2 was covered head to toe and sent to the hospital with it as the midwife wasn't sure what it was as it doesn't usually cover the whole body. Consultant fortunately confirmed that was all it was. She did have to be put to sleep on her front or side though due to the severity on her back.

We were advised to use nothing on her skin accept water or milk.

Twelve8Ts · 21/08/2021 22:27

Breast or bottle fed? If bottle fed, I switched to Kendamil which has no fish or palm oil and my daughters skin cleared right up.

My son also had it, before I switched his milk I used Doublebase emollient (pink one) recommended to me and I swear by it. It’s for dry skin but seems to work a treat for baby acne. Completely went within a couple of days.

Good luck!

My third dc (breastfed) had dreadful baby acne at that age. It took about 3 weeks to clear up. I tried various things but am pretty sure only time helped. And yes your description sounds like bad baby acne. It's hard not to feel anxious about it when it's very bad and people look a bit appalled at the sight of your newborn baby! But I bet it will clear up fully very soon.

Muststopeating · 22/08/2021 04:21

Thanks everyone.

@Twelve8Ts she's breast fed at the moment

She's had it for abiut 3 weeks so far so hopefully it'll start to clesr up soon. We had thought it wss improving on Thursday but it wws worse than ever yesterday.

I've been using cooled boiled water to wash her face at bathtime. Last night I tried some breastmilk, which I'll keep trying and I've added some Baby Care Aveeno to my online shop.

I would just lesve her alone completely but the HV can be a bit pushy so I'm keen for there to be some progress befofe fhe next check.

Based on these responses I'd say if it hasn't significantly improved by the time she's 8weeks (another 3 weeks) then I'll need to reevaluate. Does that sound right?

Honestly id just leave it alone unless its looking particularly uncomfortable or like its getting infected. It will clear of its own accord usually, it just takes time.
Muststopeating · 22/08/2021 21:08

That was 100% my intention, perhaps I just need to fend off the health visitor for a bit longer.

It does look like very uncomfortable (think really nasty heat rash, i.e. raised and clustered) but it doesn't seem to bother her so hopefully it isn't.

Hi. Just wondering if things improved? We are in same boat at 3 weeks. Thanks x

Muststopeating · 06/10/2021 04:13

Ah sorry. Meant to come back with an update.

Yes, completely. We started using baby Aveeno Daily Care after her bath every night from around 6 weeks and within a week or so her skin had cleared completely (and I was able to stop using the cream again). If you are in the same boat then I'd give it a few more weeks and if no change then perhaps try the Aveeno.

Thanks everyone for thr advice.

I need advice on neonatal acne? My baby got this at 2 1/2 weeks old currently 3 1/2 weeks old and it’s looking worse. Feeling really sad about it. How can I get it to clear up and how long did your babies have it for? Did you breast or bottle feed as I feel when I breast feed her it looks more angry?

Muststopeating · 25/05/2022 17:36

I breastfed and as per my last reply it cleared up around 7 weeks (after a week of Aveeno Daily Baby care after her bath at night).

Don't be sad, it doesn't bother them and it is quite normal. It will clear up. Wish I'd trusted my gut instead of letting the Health Visitor worry me/stopping me eating chocolate.
