Hi guys my baby girl is 1 week old and hasn't pooped in 2 days (I know it's not that long in the grand scheme of things but she's so so so uncomfy and her tummy is like a bowling ball)

Any tips or tricks to get her to poop?

I've tried massage, leg cycling, windi baby, warm cotton ball. My poor girl is in so much pain with it.

I had the same thing and found just really persevering with the cycling legs did the trick. I gave up at first after a few minutes, but then started to do it for 5-10 mins every hour and the problem sorted out

AfterGlow87 · 20/08/2021 17:18

What about a warm bath? Used to sort my baby out!

HerkyBaby · 20/08/2021 17:22

Breast fed babies don’t poop much . Wouldn’t worry too much .

0.5-1oz of cooled boiled water. Works instantly

This is true but only after about 6 weeks. In the first 6 weeks we want to see at least 2 poos as big as a 50p piece in 24 hours. Are you getting wet nappies from her?

Are you still under the midwife OP? I would call them and explain the situation including the swollen tummy and the fact she is in pain.

northernmamax · 20/08/2021 18:13

Tried warm bath quite a few times as it did seem to make her fart a bit but that's all.

Called the midwife advice line last night they said they don't worry about these things unless it's been 7 days... so we just have to put up with her being in pain until she goes or it's been a week with no poo which seems unfair her tummy is so round and she's in a lot of discomfort.

Will persevere with the leg exercises!

Please don't offer your baby water at a week old.

I agree with Reggae. I'd give the MW a call.

Poppy709 · 20/08/2021 19:14

If her tummy is really round and distended and at a week old I would want further medical advice, maybe call 111? If not, get her seen by a GP tomorrow. Xx

Poppy709 · 20/08/2021 19:14

And no I wouldn’t give a 1 week old water xx

Givemebackmylilo · 20/08/2021 19:18

@northernmamax

Yes, perfectly safe in tiny amounts

Pissinthepottyplease · 20/08/2021 19:20

Water is not safe for a new born bf baby. After 2 days I would want a new born checked out. I would ring the maternity unit and ask for her to be seen.

bookh · 20/08/2021 19:27

Go out somewhere "quickly" without a spare nappy or your changing bag.....works every time.

Congratulations, Smile

Sometimes tiger in tree works. If anything else it eases the sore tummy. Videos on you tube. Mine lived like that, I called my second Dd my little tree monkey.

When my 2 week old was constipated, we were advised by the head midwife to offer a little bit of cooled boiled water. It worked ☺️ water won't do any harm

@summertime202

Ssshhh! I suggested that. But people on this thread don't like to hear it 😅

I don't think giving cooked boiled water is a problem is the baby has been looked at by a HCP. I think it might be a problem if it's advised by someone you've never met on a forum and you have no idea what training they've had abs they've not seen your baby.

Hence my suggestion to seek the advice of the OP's own MW team or she could call the ward if she's in the England.

PurBal · 20/08/2021 20:42

DS didn’t poo for a 5 days at about the same age. He was definitely constipated, passed a little nugget the day before a very big poo. Legs right up to the chest whilst winding was recommended, and the cycle legs. Not sure it made any difference, I think it just passed.

Duploisthebest · 20/08/2021 20:42

Is baby breast or bottle fed? If breastfed then this could indicate that there is a problem with her milk intake as at 6 weeks old or younger she should be having at least 2 poos a day. Is she having plenty wet nappies?

PurBal · 20/08/2021 20:44

And DS is EBF. So the whole “breastfed babies don’t get constipated” is crap. If using formula check the ratio.

lemonyfox · 20/08/2021 20:45

Go for a drive with your baby in her car seat, always makes mine poop!

CourtneyCox2021 · 20/08/2021 20:58

Mine was like that though we had formula. We switched formulas. And still till this day my LO will only go once a day maybe once every 2 days, I did initially BF and she didn't go for 5/6 days.

I did the tricks of Bath with a warm flannel over belly, along with movement of back and forward in Bath. Lots of counter clockwise massages on belly with baby oil. bicycle legs, this can take 12 to 24 hours to work apparently and the GP suggested a cold baby wipe on LO anus and press gently on it apparently stimulates a bowel movement 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

EnglishRain · 20/08/2021 21:02

Colic massage!

ItsallBollocksanyway · 20/08/2021 21:15

If you are worried I'd call the MWs again. I rang about my LO and asked about the cool boiled water, she said use it if nothing else works and only after a feed. She said why they don't recommended water is that it can make them feel full so they won't feed when they need to.
In the end a warm flannel and bicycle legs worked so didn't need water in the end.

northernmamax · 20/08/2021 21:17

She's pooped!!! 🤣

Someone told me to gently blow on their bum while you have their legs up and nappy off. Worked a treat
