DD’s first birthday is a week before Christmas, just wanted some ideas of what your children loved when they were 1? I know it’s quite far off yet but as her birthday and Christmas are on top of each other I want to get organised!

Mind got nothing. Lots of family and friends brought gifts so I didn’t bother (one a month before Christmas)

Musical sets (shacker, tambourine etc), push cars, balls/ ball pool, teething toys, teddies, those box things with stuff on each side.

We've so much from DC1 that I've been wondering what DC2 might benefit from for first birthday. He really likes tunnels so thinking about one of those collapsable tunnels. Can't have to many balls and musical stuff really.

Soon to be 1 DC birthday/ Christmas ideas currently says:

Nursery rucksack
Socks
Grimes Rainbow
Tunnel
Bath pipes
Large toot toot fire engine
Books
Play mobile rocket

Id get something small and save money to buy something for the garden or out and about in the better weather.

Got my child wooden shape sorter, wooden stacking rings etc. There's some lovely melissa and Doug stuff which I quite like. Second kid won't touch any of it. 🤷‍♀️

Rock and ride zebra and some Thomas the tank engine wooden railway for dd1, not a lot for dd2, just more railway but did throw a big party (didn't for dd1)

Honestly, not a lot.
Personalised pj's
Personalised cutlery set
Bag of building blocks (she's 2 now and still loves them)
Maybe more keepsake items than actual toys, with it being so close to Christmas too Smile

For DD’d first birthday, everyone bought her a copy of their favourite children’s book and wrote a lovely message inside. We didn’t need any more huge, plastic toys in our small house. Best decision we made. She is 9 now and has a shelf of beautiful books to treasure. In the event of a fire, I honestly think I’d sweep them off the shelf as we legged it!

Busy board/fidget board. They are pricey but mine hasn't got bored of it and has been playing with it everyday for 3 months! Some great personalised ones on Etsy

Softplay set was good for our 1 year old but it took another 6 months for her to really enjoy it.

DS2 will be 1 a month before Xmas. I'm planning to get him a push along Walker and some mega blocks so far. Not sure what else yet.

Peachee · 15/08/2021 21:57

Last year DS was 1 on 13th December so I bought lots of toys I thought he might like and then split them so he had half for bday half for Xmas.. shape sorters, push along trolleys, musical things were a hit.. we bought him a spinning giraffe you put balls in its mouth and a rainforest fisher price toy with animals in it.. rollin rovee was an absolute waste of money.. musical instruments set, little toot toot cars things like that.. anything with buttons he can press that lights up and sings has been a winner since as he dances to them now. He also likes balls, and his slide in the garden.. sorry rambling now.. just trying to give some ideas lol xxx

I’m getting my son a pikler triangle and a toy kitchen

Three children later, the 1yr old presents that have the most staying power (ie bought for DC1 and still enjoyed)

The squeaky eggs (tomy?)
A Melissa and Doug bus with animals that fit in the holes.
Blocks in a push along trolley
Mini plastic car/ride on thing.

(We also have hundreds of books which are always a great idea)

One year olds love empty boxes and wrapping paper. Save your money for the future.

MyMabel · 16/08/2021 05:01

I brought my daughter a step and slide soft play set for her 1st birthday. There hasn’t been a single day since that she hasn’t played on it.. she absolutely loves it!

Highly recommend it, great for taking out in the garden during summer too. We also got the castle blocks which gets played with less so, but still very much loved.

Mine all loved water at that age so bath toys were popular.

LBB2020 · 16/08/2021 07:59

Bubble machine, sound and light drum, ball pit and some board books with sound buttons and lift up flaps

Alwaystrappedunderababy · 16/08/2021 08:35

Our daughter turned one last month and we just got her an armchair with footstool under it. It is next to all her books and honestly we thought she may not use it for a few months but every morning without fail she goes straight over to sit in it and flicks through a couple of books while I sort breakfast. Best purchase we have made for her!

Warrickdaviesasplates · 16/08/2021 09:32

Dd got an indigo jamm scooter. Kids always play on it when they're over and it's lasted well and has been used a lot by our other dc.

DS got a ball pit, he loved it but I hate picking all the balls up from under the sofa so it's been put away until he's in the big bedroom.

Dd also got an Ikea play kitchen which is now 9 years old and has been consistently used by all the DC.
