Growth percentile confusion

Hi everyone!

I took my son for his first check up and I’m confused about the meaning of his percentiles, dr said everything looks fine so I’m not concerned but just very confused!!!

His head circumference is 24th percentile, height is 50th (so avg) and his weight is 75th!

Does this mean anything or are the percentiles not necessarily connected?

Thanks everyone :)

They are not really connected although there is often a correlation.
Really they are just looking firstly to check you are not at the extreme for any, which would trigger further checks. And secondly to make sure they are tracking a similar line, mainly for weight. If they go up from 25th to 75th centile or vice versa they would look into the reason why, maybe appetite issues or illness or whatever.
It's a very crude tool but it is just there to screen for potential issues in a quick and easy way. Just don't read too much into it! Good luck.

I wouldn’t be worried by any of it. To put it in laymen’s terms a high centile for weight vs height is a Buddha baby😝, a lower centile for weight versus height can be a skinned rabbit look. Irrespective, once babies get a bit older they all even out. The weight is the most important and it’s making sure they don’t plummet when they are babies.

I think it is a minefield and overly stressful tbh!

My son was born weight 95th centile, Head Circumference 98th centile and height 2nd centile! Like a little lollipop :-D

Is is 3yo now and perfectly proportioned

No idea!
I had a skinned baby rabbit type who was 5lb at birth.
Couldn’t get my head round all the “percentile “ talk so ignored it completely.

Anyhow, my skinned baby rabbit is now nearly 6ft and strong as an ox.
So in the end….the big picture..it means feck all.

Thanks everyone ! This is my first and I had no idea if it’s something to worry about! He looks perfectly proportioned to us but the percentiles threw me off!! He’s putting on enough weight and is happy and healthy so I think he’ll be fine

His dad is tall so I’m expecting the same here Grin The percentiles seem over complicated and not well explained :/

I think he’s definitely on the Buddha baby side lol!!
