How do I get my 3.5 year old to stop calling me mum?

Started a couple of days ago and it's constant.

I would like to be called mummy again. Mum sounds dreadful.

Hmm
Blankspace4 · 11/08/2021 07:43

Errr does it really matter?

Bopahula · 11/08/2021 07:45

I just reinforced it was mummy every time and wouldn't answer to mum. That said my dd was around 5 when she started that.
I conceded at 7 and now I'm just mum unless she's hurt herself or wants sleepy cuddles, at which point mummy still gets used.

'Mum' sounds dreadful? Really?

Slashandcut · 11/08/2021 07:46

Repeat mummy every time she does it and then wait for her to correct herself.

Mum makes me wince

ReeseWitherfork · 11/08/2021 07:46

My 2 yo started calling me mum a couple of months ago... Think he's got it from the Bluey opening theme.

Wonderbox · 11/08/2021 07:48

Explain why ‘mummy’ sounds fine and a contraction into one of its two syllables sounds ‘dreadful’?

inappropriateraspberry · 11/08/2021 07:48

Really? My daughter sometimes calls me by my first name or even calls me Dad!
She might again, but she might not. Does it really matter? It will still be repeated all day, every day, whatever she calls you!

Slashandcut · 11/08/2021 07:48

I also won’t answer to mum although it’s very rare and usually as a joke.

To be fair they do call me mum when they’re around their mates which is fine. Mummy the rest of the time though

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 11/08/2021 07:49

You don't?
Children graduate from mummy to mum. It happens. Get over it!

YesDisney · 11/08/2021 07:49

Lol what?

When is he allowed to stop calling you mummy? Will he be expected to at 10? 15? 20?

Mummy makes me cringe personally.

pinkyredrose · 11/08/2021 07:49

What's the problem?

Yamaya · 11/08/2021 07:50

What's wrong with mum?!

Softleftpowerstance · 11/08/2021 07:50

You sound like my mum.

She is cold and snobby.

Slashandcut · 11/08/2021 07:51

Each to their own. I don’t like mum. I won’t answer to it and they’ve never graduated to mum because I didn’t answer to it. Other kids calling their parent mum doesn’t make me wince, I don’t even notice I just don’t like it for me

DukeOfEarlGrey · 11/08/2021 07:52

I know a few adults who still say mummy and it’s really jarring. Once had an ex who surprised me by saying it on a first visit to meet the family and it put me right off him!

Bancha · 11/08/2021 07:52

This has to be a windup! You are posting on mumsnet! Grin

To me yes, what's the problem?

Why does is matter?

For the pp that hearing mum makes you 'cringe'. What are you going to be called when the child grows up? You cannot expect them to call you mummy forever?

Blippibloppi · 11/08/2021 07:52

Mine does this too, makes him sound about 13.

Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuum. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

Slashandcut · 11/08/2021 07:52

Can assure you I’m not cold or snobby. My kids are smothered in love!

You realise that all over the country there are regional differences with the use of mum/mummy/mammy?

Mybobowler · 11/08/2021 07:52

@ReeseWitherfork omg yes, it's Bluey! My 2.5 year old has also just started calling us Mum and Dad and I had no idea where she'd picked it up from. Hadn't occurred to me to blame the Bluey, but that must be it! Grin
