IUD/pill after baby

At my eight week check up (meant to be six weeks but running late here), my GP told me I couldn't go on the combined pill because I am breastfeeding my baby boy and the hormones would be bad for him and that I couldn't have the IUD either (which I had for most of my twenties) because if it wasn't put in straight after the baby was born it couldn't be put in until I had stopped breastfeeding because it might pierce my uterus as it was put in. I've never heard of either of these things. Everything I can see about the IUD says it can't be put in until 6 weeks (long gone) and I know the combined pill can have an effect on milk but not a huge one? I don't want progestin only pill because that made me utterly miserable last time I was on it.

I had a copper coil at about 6 or 8 weeks but IIRC any time after 6 weeks is fine. Combined pill isn’t ok when BF and the mini-pill is horrid. It’d probably be worth contacting your nearest family planning clinic.

I had mirena IUD inserted at 10 weeks post partum. They consent you to a slightly higher risk of rupture as a rare potential complication (I had a C section), but it's not a contraindication.

Mini pill is the only pill you can have when breastfeeding though.

You may want to seek a second opinion to find what works well for you.
