How much sleep does your 2.5/3 year old get in 24 hours?

Desperately trying to figure out where I'm going wrong with my DD who used to sleep 12 hours a night perfectly :'(

She doesn't nap and goes to be 6.30pm/7pm falls asleep ok but wakes 2/3 times a night. Her overall amount of sleep seems terrible compared to what she supposedly meant to be having

Mine would have about 11-12 hours at that age

pinkmoon18 · 10/08/2021 14:58

We've just dropped the nap, so currently 12/13 hours.
Does your LO still nap?

pinkmoon18 · 10/08/2021 14:58

Just read she doesn't nap 🙈 sorry.

What is she waking for? Can she tell you?
Does she think it's time to get up?

My son dropped his nap at 2.5, is now just over 3 and sleeps 7pm - 7am (obviously sometimes slightly more, sometimes slightly less)

RubertRoo · 10/08/2021 15:03

At that age my DD used to average about 9 or 10 hours? Sleep at 7am - awake at 5am with wake ups in the night up to 1-2 hours awake in the night. No day time naps at all - she stopped those about 2 years old. I think some children just need less sleep than others and mine is one that needs a lot less than others!

RubertRoo · 10/08/2021 15:03

That should be sleep at 7pm*

Londonlady92 · 10/08/2021 15:16

Doesn't nap but it was working really well as it meant she slept 12 sometimes 13 hours at night!! God I hate my past self for taking it for granted.

If she naps even 15 minute bedtime is a nightmare.

Is she crying?
Or is she just awake in her cot?
If she's awake and happy just pottering then just leave her.

Starjammer · 10/08/2021 15:23

About 11.5 hours overnight. She hasn't napped in a long time alas!

Londonlady92 · 10/08/2021 15:28

She gets out of bed and cries at the gate, doesn't need or want anything just doesn't want to sleep lol cries

What’s her bedtime routine like? Does she self settle when she first goes down? Is her room dark?

AllyBama · 10/08/2021 15:40

2.5 year old DS has almost dropped his day nap but will still take it maybe 1 or 2 days a week. On those days it takes him a little longer to go to sleep in the evening but he’s out by 7.30pm and up at 7am-ish.

If he’s skipped the day nap then he’s out as soon as he hits the pillow at 6.30pm, up at 7am.

Has anything changed recently for her? New people at nursery or has she seen something on TV or somewhere that’s frightened her and she’s waking up with nightmares? Are you toilet training at the moment?

Londonlady92 · 10/08/2021 16:02

@BeaBeaBuzz we have the same bedtime routine as always which worked really well and still does with my eldest, bath, teeth, stories in dim bedroom and then bed. She has a night light as she started to get funny with the dark

Do you stay with her until she’s asleep? Just wondering if waking and no one being there is the problem? They seem to settle better if they wake in night if the go to sleep on their own at bedtime IME

Nurseynoodles · 10/08/2021 16:06

10-12 hours depending on how easy she is to get to sleep and how quiet the house is in the morning. She has serious FOMO.

Until 2.5 she was up several times every night, sometimes for hours. She sleeps through now and has just turned 3 (fingers crossed, touch wood) and is much happier for it.

Londonlady92 · 10/08/2021 16:10

@BeaBeaBuzz I lead her back to bed and say its bedtime 99% of the time and leave, but she wakes again 3 hours later!

My daughter is 2.5, she is usually asleep by 7.30 and wakes anytime between 6.30-7.30 so 11-12 hours. No nap. She’s in a bed, not a cot, has a consistent bedtime routine and I don’t stay with her while she falls asleep (though I pop in and out for reassurance if she’s unsettled at bedtime).

That said she recently had a spate of more wakings - she keeps catching colds from nursery plus I wonder if there is something developmental at this stage? She has settled back down in the last couple of weeks though. The other day she slept till 8am at the weekend, I’ve never been so happy 😅

Bluegreen143 · 12/08/2021 08:59

Oh one random thought - is she potty trained in the day and does she drink lots of fluids at night? My 2.5yo is dry both day and night and will wake in the night for a pee if she needs one (usually she makes it the 12 hours just fine but if she’s had a big drink before bed for example). But before we stopped using night nappies a few months ago I think she was doing this and I wasn’t picking up that’s what she wanted because she had a nappy on and it just didn’t occur to me. Basically as soon as I day trained her she no longer wanted to pee in a night nappy but wasn’t super verbal and when we were all tired at night it took me a bit of time to realise because she’d just be crying. So we stopped using night nappies and for a while I’d put her on the potty at 11pm (we don’t do this anymore) and having that late night potty trip meant she didn’t wake through the night looking to do a pee. Just a random left-field thought!

3, turning 4 next month, gets 10-11 hours sleep and my just turned, 2 year old has 12 hours, and doesn't nap anymore.
